The work of widening the gage in now proceeding steadily and has been carried to a considerable distance, but until it is completed-which is not likely to be the case before next August at the curliest the new rolling stock cannot bo employed. It is a very unfortunate position, for not only will the line get a reputation for incompetence among the Chinese, but also the Japanese are being severely criticised by foreign onlorkers who ignore the real facts of the case.
