The Commonwealth law officers have lud under consideration a claim unte by the Government of South Australia that the Victorian Goverment was acting unen- stitutionally in schsidising a stonwship service to Singapero.
The ground of the objection is that this constituted a bounty, and that according to the Constitution, the Commonwealth can South now alone offer export bounties. The Sou Australian Premior also brought under the notice of the Commonwealth authorities the report that the New South Wales, Victor and Queensland Governments were co service to Singapore, operating to subsidise a
and Calcutta. The opinion of worth Law Department is to the effect that a subsidy to s line of steamers by a State is not necessarily a bounty ou the production or export of goods. It is, of course, open to the South Australian Gor ernment to refer to matter to the High Court, and by way of an sction against the State of Victoria.
