THE CRICKET CARNIVAL.
FIRST DAY,
Shanghai's First Innings.
Good Start by Hongkong.
Although the opening of the Cricket Carnival this morning was not, attended by the brilliant sunshine which would have, porhaps, enhanced the picturesqueness of the ground to the spectators the main held off and the light, at least in the earlier part of the day, left little to be desired from a cricketer's point of view. Evon in the dab light which prevailed in the morning the ground looked attractive, the stands supplying many points of colour. Festoons of Chinose lanterns had been suspended round the ground and added musterially to its picturesquenERS.

A glance round the stands showed that there are in Hongkong many adherents to the creed that all work and no phy makes Jack a dull boy. Fimm the Governor ment down there was evidently no intention of running any risk in the direction of he euning dull, and business was for the time left carefully alizee. While it woull be much easier to mention those who wore not present than those who were it may he mentioned that besides the Governor and Laly Lugard and suite there were noticed, in a word, everybody who body in Hongkong.
