As a north wind was provailing at the time, the fames, spread with great rapidity although rain was falling. A great part of the interior of the vessel was almost entirely destroyed. She had been under repair sinco the year beforo last, and was to have been relaunch- Another long period el in a day or two. for repaires, will now, however, bo re- quired. The outbreak is attributed to the upsetting of a cm of potvolemn by a workman. Captain Takahashi, the com- mander of the warship, has sent in his resignation to the authorities concerned,

He said that Australia, which believed in universal service, would be ready to assist
