THE THAW CASE.

Merciless Cross-Examination of Mrs Thaw.

LONDON, Februarỳ 23, After sororal hours of perciless orces- examination, Mra Thaw admitted that her rulations with Stanford White continued. for some time, but against her will

Stanford White nude her an allowance of twenty-five dollars weekly, whilst sho was unemployed.

Mrs Thaw then broke down and wept

bitterly,

SCENE IN COURT ON OPENING DAY. After many wearying delays the trin! commenced yesterday, says a San Francisc telegram of February 5, of Harry K.. Thaw of Pittsburg, the husband of Evelyn Nasbit, a well known artist model and chorus girl, ho is buing triod for the murder of Stanford White, a well known architect, in New York, on May 1, 1908.

To the surprise of avery one in Court the prosecution submitted all its evidenco in one day and practically closed its case,

The defence will be opened to-day, atates the same wire, and the plea filed is one of insanity,

The light-hearted demeanour of Mrs. Evelyn Thaw created comment during the opening of the case. The wife of the prisoner on trial for his life seemed to find considerablo amusement in the courtroom

several times at inuidents that impressed her no amusing. The style of a hat won' by one of the women particularly aroused her risibilities, and the covered her face with her maff to hide ber laughter.

From latest exchanges to kand it appears that two hours before the doors of the court room opened hundreds jammed the corridors and tried to force their way past the police lines. Although a fores of fifty policemon was on hand, they were pushed and jostled by men and women until they were driven almost to their wits enda. Clubs worn drawn and the more persistent in the crowd received severe pokes in the ribes. By ten o'clock the crowd had in- creased until the main hall of the Criminal Courts building was black with people.

The press arrangements for transmitting reports of the trial from the court-room to the newspaper offices throughout Americs Band to London and Paris were more sugges- tive of a great national convention to

W.G. HUMPHREYS & CO., nominate a candidate for Prosident than of a trial for murder. A special telegraph office has been established in the Criminal Courta building, with a big staff of operators sending over many wiros, Que London paper has the exclusive use of two wires. A pspor published in Pittsburg, Mr Thaw's former home, has a direct telephone wire from the courthouse to its office.
