He was in charge of Chiness Interests in Korea before the outbreak of the war with Japan, and played a great part in the negotiations.“ But for that experience he might have continued as an official of the old type. But he emerged from these days of defest and disaster with one lesson barned into his brain. He realised that China could never hope to hold her own until she had soquired the knowledge of the West.
