One of the west terrible mining dinustors that has occurred in England in recent yeam has taken place in the Wingate Grange Colliery, Durham, between Hartle pool and Sunderland.
Tranty-ning men have perished, nad their bodies have been recovered from the mine. By seven o'clock on Oct. 15 eighty other miners who had boot entombed to
the mine wero brought to the surface alive, many of them in á oritical and unconscions
akatu.
The explosion took place just before midnight on October 14. Estimates of the number of the men in the mine vary but apparently nearly 300 hawern, and stone-shifters went down the mine that. oight. They were all impilsound when the explosion occurred.
Fire-damp is believe to have caused the disaster.
The work of rescue was slow and difficult, wing to the prosence of onormods quantities of wreckage and the prevalence of noxious gases,
The_rescuers worked heroicsily through. thonight and the whole of the next day,
but late in the oveuing many minera, apparently over 100, were still untosabed. They were, however, stated to be alive and apparently safe, eo for me the term can be used in connection with a position so perilous.
After nearly thirty-six hours of ceaseless work on the part of the rescuers all the ninety-three men who were entombed in the Harvey sest of the Wingate Collfery liste boen bringht to the surge alive.
