WINCHESTER PAST AND

PRESENT.

Undermining the Cathedral.

"A stately city, with a great old cathedral in its centro, keeping solemn guard over it,"

Such is Winchester. the ancient southern capital of England. As the visitor traversen its winding stenstr, and passes under the quaint, old-fashioned buildings with their rod-tiled roofs; and as be outare. the Close, with its velvet lawns and creaper and rois-clad walls, there settles upon him something of that. indefinable peace which seems to hover over alt cathedral cities. Yet kare, in the midst of this atmosphero of calm and old worldliness, one of the most extraordinary feats of modern en- gineering is being undertaken. Ons ken- ture of this experiment is the employment of divers, with full sea-going apparatus, to grope ainidet foundations that were sup. paod to be on dry land.

The cathedral gives to Winchester ilo atmosphere of clolatral seclusion; the cathedral in the reason for those rose clad buildings which surround it, those pre- bendal dwellings sot amid groen lawns and | gardens, all aglow with blossoms; and the cathedral again is the cause of this bringing together the old and the new, the applica tion of the accumulated intellect of oratories to save the visibla memoriai of | those centuries, For Winchester's "solemn guard" is in danger of collapen. It is tot- tering an its foundations; its walls are | gaping, and ita roof in anttling. More than twelve months ago the work of saving the stately cathedral was commenced. Much (has been scoomplished, but many more months the engineer themselves cannot any how many-most elapie before the work is complete.

BUT IN THE VALLEY.

About the year 1202, and during the episcopate of Bishop Godfrey de Lucy, it was decided to extend the eastern and of the edifice by adding more ainion, and the principal portion of this extension is that part now known as the Lady Chapel. When the architect sst to work to secure hia foundations, be found - pr be was pro- bably already aware of the fact that at a depth of little more than 20ft a bed of pest rested on the gravel. The explana tion of this formation is that the cathedral I is built in the salloy. In order to secure a steady buse on which to rast his founda. tions, the builder of that period laid hun- dreds of beech trunks horizontally across the peat, and then fed in with chalk and fint. By a carious oversight, almost in explicable when one remembers the skill and ingenuity of the old cathedral build- er, the possible decay of the wooden "bottom" and the consequent shifting and falling away of the rubble of fint and chalk on the unstable pest bed ware ob- foresson. And this falling away way, of 1349 coûtus, inevitable.
