GENERAL POLE-CAREW.
Eminent Soldlòr Placed on the Rotired List.
The London Guz tie of August 14, con- tains the following announcement
Major-General Sir Reginald Pole Carey, 1.0., OVO., is placed on retired pay, and le granted the honorary rank of Lien- tenant-General an retirement. Dated Feb.
By the retirement of. Major-General Bir: Reginald Pola-Carou, the Army prematurely losce the services of a capable soldier, says the Standard. It is an open secret that this withdrawal from the Active list of one so specially qualified for command is the result of unheeded protest against suporeee~~~ sion to the rank of lieutenant-general.- Selcation" for this rank have been, on the whole, fairly made, but in one or two cases supersession is claimed to be unjust and the case of Sir Reginald Polo-Carew is classed by the Army under this exception.
Sir Reginald Pole-Carew was born on Mayday. 1849, and after education at Eton and Oxford he entered the Coldstream Guards in 1869, sud became Beutenant and captain in 1872.
His staff service commenced in India se AD.C. to the Viceroy in 1878, and from 1884 to 1890 hu was military secretary first to the Commander-in-Chief in India, Lord Robarts. He was a local lieutenant- general in South Africa, and latterly commanded the 8th Division in Ireland,
His warservice.commenced in the Afghan campaign, under Lord Roberts, to which he proceeded from his post with the Viceroy to serve on the personal staff in the war He was present at Charaslah and at Takhi- i-shab, Kabul, Sharpor the Chardeh Vailed (where his horse was shot under him), and also marched with the relief column to Kandahar. He was three time mentioned
in despatches. In the Egyptian axpedition- he served under Lord Wolseley as orderly cficer to the Duke of Connaught, and was present at Mahuta and Tel-el-Kebir. In the Barnese war of 1888-7 he was: military secretary to Lord Roberts, and was again referred to in despatches home, and received a 0.B.
It to, however, to South Africa that Sir Reginald Pole-Corew owes the chief points in his service. In 1899 he was Command- ant at headquarters, and later he succes. sively commanded the 9th Brigade, the Guarde Brigade, and the 11th Division. He was present at the advance of Kimber- ley, being engaged at Modder River and Magersfontein, where his personal courage jo leading was the topic of his brigade. After the lust named disaster it was due to bis advice that a retirément was not mude to De Aar, and soldiers of every grade now agres that this decision saved a probable rising in Cape Colony.
Later be served in the Free State at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Vet River, Zand Bive, and other actions, and be it was who, after opening the railway from Bloemfontein to Bethulie and Norral's Point, urged expeditious action to cat of the Bours rotiring on Kronstadt from the Cage Colony frontier through Thaba n'cha. Had his advice been taken.all Free State opposition would probably have been ended thers and thon. With the prescience of the
