RESTORING THE CAMPANILE WITH "IMPROVEMENTS."
To rebuild a stracture exactly, after its clubretion by uro or earthquake, would| seen an easy task, given the possession of the plans and speciftentions of the original. But such exact reconstitution is, according to Jenn Lasitte, who writes in La Nature (Paris, June 16), practically impossible. New architects will always, he says, lanikk | a new structure, putting something of :hesselves inte thu new buldog, poster now precisely they try to copy the old. e ilustrate by the use of the now Cuupanile in Venice, which fa says will differ in material points from the one tanz felf in ruins on July 14, 1922, though intended to repradter it exactly. Mr Lalita dows Cưd put even the found. tism, which has no been laid, in poncisely like thist of the original. He says.
"Was it necessary to rebuild? Many of those who lovat it must have answered resolutely in the negative; they hold that

So that, if we consider the nuinerous stages through which it has passed, we may ask which of these succes- sive stages has been chosen by the archi
acts for repauction.
They have, in fact, taken the simplest couse; after having astured us that all should be just as it was, they have pr their bands tegether and have composed a wort of anomaly of stone, the result of which will he that the asport of the nomi ment will be altered by hatinga um that was forunurly invisible; (2) slut its might will be modilic (improved, it is true, bas what differenre does that the from the point of view of reconstitution 5, (3) that a vertain number of columns and of useless i details will be left nut.
There is already in Italy a "Comperido question," and Seuster Tiepolo bar Intely ochood it by interpellating the Minister of Public Instruction on the subject of thusleje of St. Mark's It is true that the minister, Bonelli, answered that he had nothing to slo with the matter, which was the business of the city of Vonice; walk and controversy are still going on. For our part, we have simply wished to note a lue type of the comical situation into which we are often driven by the rebuilding mania. Wo have no reason, a priori, to doubt the talent and perfect good faith of the archicets of the Campanile. Perhaps it would have been better if they had decided that wo should see Venice horoafter with new features either without a campande or with a new one, built after their owu plans, in place of the work that they are now engaged upon, with so much science and skill, at the risk of dissatisfying the Archeolgists and the artists, these hostile brethren. For perchance, as Bono sceptics even now predict, the new Campanilo, under the brilliant Venetian sky, will follow its predecessors in not giving the desired impression and in not realizing the beauty of its forobenra!"
