IN INDIA.
Writing to a Bydney paper Profeso David, a well-known geologist, describes a tour through India. Of bla first encounter with the country he saga: "It is the fashion of the globe-trotter whó haz-apent· a fortnight in Indis to try to write a book about us," esid an' exporiunced "Anglo- Indian' to 'ma fow days ago. As I have just spent the regulation time of a fortnight in trotting through India I may be permitt ed to conform to the fashion, and describe Bome of the scopes of India as they present themselves to other ages.
On my arrival at Colonibo, on the after-
noon of June 10, In the F.M.8. "Nora," I found that a stoninor was starting in s few hours for the Indian town of Tuticorin, on the opposite side of the Gulf of Manar to Colombo. With the help of T. Cook and Son's well-manned boat my quarter-ton | of luggage (largely cooke and minerale) was quickly shifted around to the Tattoorin Beamer. I found that I was the only white passenger on baird. The sky was cloudy, threatening for the bresking of the moonsoon bat we had a lovely passage ver, arriving before 6'.m. on June 11. The ses ia shallow for several miles off the cous!, and we had to tranship into a small steam tender in order to land.
On this tender I made my first sequain- tance with the typical Bengales Baboo, that is, onu of the swell natives of the Bengal ares. He was a youngish man, belonging to the medical profession, and was just returning from Singapore. He seemed a little excited when he first addressed me Speaking excellent English, he said, That fellow (indicating the native skipper of the tender) has just had the impertinence to tell the to move ent of this seat at the stern and go to the bow: he didn't realize that I was a saloon paceenger; he never made a greater mistake in his life. I just told him to go and be banged." He was very courteous fellow, full of all kinds of information, and very good company.
On arrival at the little landing atago my luggage at once croated industry; int I hud to engage a sort of boss or manager, who would be responsible for the safe carriage of the goods and their delivery at the railway station a few hundred yarda en distant. There was considerable compoti. tion among the cooling to possers themselves of the fightest parcels, such as hatbox-and valino, a struggle which led to the survival grof the unfittest for carriage, Puch as my large cabin trunk, and some innocent looking Japanese baskots laden with specimens from Singleton and dervis Bay. partly for the Calcutta Museum. I found out pre- sently that ovary man was to be paid at the Forato per parcel, whother, it was hatbox or * Saratoga The rate { was one anta per parcel. I may conark here that there are 16 annas in the rupen, and as the ropeo is worth just now It punce, que sona is of curso equal to one penby. The divisions of the upee are used Bolloquially in other than a monetary senso thus Datire will say that he is 8 anne through with his job, meaning that it is half finished and later I heard souïe white people remark when a lady of colour entered the hotal diningroom,
