Mr R. W. Turner, for the prosecution, explained that the dofondant held wéances” at Gainsville, where charges were modo for ; admission. On the three days in question, defendant, who was a medium, professed to call down the spirits of certain dead parsons. One apparition was declared to ho that of Calonul Mayhew's child, who was not dead. Another was an uncle George, who did not exist, and a third was the mother of the colonel, who was alive and well.
On March 18 Colonel Mayhow and a Captain Carlton attended a stance, and while the spirit of a brother otheer, still living, was before the company, Colonel Mayhew seized the apparition, and Captain Carlton turned an an electric light with which bo had come provided, and disclosed the fact tint Craddock, the defendant, was acting both as tertium and apparition. After this, when the court was being cleared of witnesses in the caso, Mr Turner rose and said he did not know whether Mr fankes, who uppeared for the defence, would object to Mr Maskolyne, who was prement, remaining in court. He was to be called on as an expert, and he should like him to bear the evidence.
