COAL IN SYDNEY HARBOUR.
SYDNEY, May 22............ The second deep shaft of the Sydney Harbour Collieries at Balniain has reached coal at a depth of 2.990ft. The seam is reported to be several feet thick and of good quality,
<
The above message unpunces the con- clusion of an engineering work which is among the greatest undertaken in Australia. The first shaft was sunk to a depth of Home 2,800ft, and good coal was discovered, but the seam was too thin for profitable working. The coal hitherto met- with has been the best steam coal, and the. mine my possibly become a very useful
naval asset.

This person representod himself to be tho soc-VALUABLE HOUSEHOLD retary of Don Jaime, and induced the 'jeweller to hand over the necklace to him. The whole affair was threshed out, and the Court, in a judgment worthy of Solomon, apportioned blame all round. It held that all three parties to the action had been culpable in some degree or other: the prince for admitting to his intimacy a man capable of fraud, the jeweller for parting with the necklace without a written order, and the bankers for dealing with an intermediary without making due inquiry. Don Jaime gets no damages, and each of the parties concerned has to pay a third of the cost of redeeming the necklace.
