THE P. AND O. COMPANY.

Wonderful Garser.

An interesting article on the P. and 0. 8. N. Company appeared in the London Standard of May 11 from which we take the following excerpts

The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company began its regular career in the thirties of last century by running mail packets from London to Lisbon and Gibraltar, under contract with the Government of that, day, as then re- presented by the Lords of the Admiralty, The "Peninsula "was the phrase then, and one full of intimate national signifi

Dance.

Malta and Alexandris (under royal and, in 42, Ifa first steamer for India, the Hindoostan," started from England in September for its long passage via the Cape. It was regarded as not less than a nationa event, and the "Hindoostan," though no more than a third of the size of the smallest ship in the line to-day, was regarded as a wonderful achievement of naval architec

ture.

Within a couple of years the company was in a position to undertake a mail service extending from England to Alex andria, and from Suez to Ceylon, Madras, and Calcutta, with a further extension from Ceylon to Penang, Singaporo, Hon g kong, and Shanghai. In a short time the company's Calcutta and China lines were doubled. It instituted steam communica. tion with Australia in 1852 by a line from Singapore. The service between Suoz add Bombay (long clung to by the East India Company as a means of keeping their navy in existence) came into the hands of the "P. and O," a couple of years later. During the halfcentury which has elapsed since then, the "P. and O." have. retained and expanded as circumstances demanded the British Government mail services throughout the East, under 'n series of contracts which in every case have passed the test of public tender. And it is but fair to add that with each fresh contract the P. and O." have given an accelerated service, and taken a smaller subsidy.

The early Victorian P. and O." pag- senger made-

to the storied Enst ria South Africa-his iminediato successor journeyed by sea to Alexandria, thence by the Mahmoudich Canal to the Nile, thence by Nile steamer to Cairo, and thence aboard omnibuses of a sort acroes & Hund- red miles of desert to Suez, where ocean steamers were once more available. Caravans of three thousand camels were often used in

I in the transport of a single

vessel's cargo from Cairo to Suez, every

package in which had to undergo three separate transfers between the Mediter ranean and the Red Sea. '

With the opening of the Suez Canal thirty years after the founding of the line came the great crisis in the fortunes of the P. and O." At the same time came the adoption of the compound engine

the propulsion of ships, na abatement of the Government mail

mail subsidy, an increase in the amount of mails, and a startling.all- round refluction in

os and freight rates. For a year the of the line seemed dubious, and the strain placed upon its finances was doubtless crushingly severe.

But the company possessed a fine reserve fund in the energy and acumen of its heads and staff, and the work of building up an entirely new fleet under entirely new conditions proceeded apacu. That fleet comprises to-day close upon half a million tons of merchant shipping, in ships which have cost nearly nine millions sterling. This shipping traverses three million- miles of ocean per annum, and

million tons of coal and pays Suez Canal dues of £322,000 in a year. The subven- tion paid to the "P. and D." Company

A SINGULAR DISEASE,

› Serious Outbreak in Japan,

According to the Japanese papers, a report received by the Home Department. from the Governor of Toyama Prefecture, statės that a strange malady, which for some un- known reason is known as "the English disease" is prevalent in Him

Himi district, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, where some seventy persons, mainly children, have already been attacked by it. The 'malady is believed, howevor, not to be infectious. The first symptom, it is stated, is a pain in the joints of the feet which subsequently extends to the knee joints and loin. In the course of a few days, curvature of the upper part of the spine is said to appear, while the chest becomes contracted and pointed, giving the patient the aspect of a hudobback, The sufferer in the meantime. becomes extremely emaciated, as if a victim of starvation, and the leg waste away until it is impossible for him to walk,

A representative of the Mainichi, who has since been making investigations on the subject, reports that the disease is spreading with great rapidity. There are Bow, he says, thousands of patients in the three prefectures, Toyama, Fukui, and Ishikawa photographs of several of the

enflavors.

CURE FOR SEA-SICHNESS.

The following cure for son sickness, in vented by Dr Eugen Wolf, merits a trial by sufferers on account of its extreme simplicity. All the appliances necessary basin of hot water at eightly degrees and a couple of handkerchiefs. Whenever the traveller feels that he is

becoming giddly, he must lie flat on his

back in the cabin sofa or a deck mir. The clothes are unbuttoned so that there as nothing to binder Weathing. Then the handkerchiefs are wrung out in the hot water and bound round the forehead, This bandage must be made very tight, which can be done by using a penholder, or something of the kind, as a lever when fwisting it During the first minute or two the sensation is not particularly plons int, be those who bear it should be com pletely cured, which is surely sufficient ward fon any temporary inconvenience, When the bandage begins to get cold, another must be put on and the procees continual, each time with a hotter handage, if possible, until the patient is relieved; of the squeamish feeling. This should be accomplished in about half-an-hour. In very obstinate cases it may take an hour. While under treatment the patient must smoke. One of the not eat, drink, or symptoms an sickness is excessive thirst, which must not be assunged

craving for food he may the patient has a be given a little dry toast and weak tea. Two hours after the cure the patient need not fear a hearty meal, smoking, or drink- ing. Those who undergo this treatment at the beginning of a voyage aro never troubled with sea-sickness, even where the sea runs high.

Dofondant had so confused his case with inaccurate details that it was difficult to follow. The front shops were finished to lot. Defendant was to have complete possession, excepting the "Daily Press " premises on July 1 and as a matter of fact he made his alterations to the upper floors depending on obtaining posses sion of the inner rooms of the "Daily Press." In view of his finding on the princi- was not pal point that the "Daily Press to go out at the end of February, defendant could not have let the upper floors until they were finished, viz., October 31, but they were not finished until November 15. It was clear that the defendant was entitled to half a month's rent of the upper floor, but as it was difficult to assess such damages and as there were always some contingent damages the Chief Justice thought 81500 would meet defendant's claim, and gave judgment accordingly.

An interesting match, for stakes amount ing to £40, took place in the Kursal Grounds at Southend, in May. The competitora were W. T. Partridge, aged 58 years, and Charles Ransom, aged 44. The last named allowed his opponent 14 yards, being a yard for each year of the difference between their ages. The match consisted of three races. The 10 yards resulted in a dead heat, the 115 yards in a win for Ransom by three yards, and the 125 yards in a win also for Ransom by five yards, who thus secured the rubber of the match. The winner, who is said to be a brother of Harry Ransom, the well-known London Athletic Club trainer, was successful in the Christmas and Easter Sheffield Handicaps 18 years ago.
