VARIATION,

A score or so of years ago the anatomist who carefully dissected the body of a man and of an ape--even but a single example of each-was thought to be quito com petent to speak of the resemblances and the differences. Now however, the recog nition of the wonderful agiount of variation that occurs in the animal frame shows us that the structure must be estimated in percentages. Such and such a proportion shows certain blood-vessels, for instance, distributed on one plan; a lesser proportion shows the same vessels distributed on another plan, As Dr.

Mitchell puts it: Anatomically speak ing, allied species are simply different centres of oscillation in a continuous series of anatomical variations." In closely allied species the anatomical variations that occur in a high percentage in one species occur in a lower percentage in the allied one. Thus abnormalities in man occur in a high percentage in one or other of the great What occurs in a high porcentage apes. of cases in man occurs in a low percentage in apes.

PHYSIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE.

One of the most romarkable of the recent discoveries in physiology is what is known as the serum test. When the blood of one animal is injected into the body of au- other some remarkable changes take place in the blood of the latter. If a fluid, known as serum, be prepared from the blood of, say, a guinea pig, a fow drops of rabbit's blood he added to this, no change takes place. If, however-rahhit's blood be in- Jected into a guinea pig, and then scrum be prepared from this guinea pig's blood, it is found that the guinea pig's blood lins become a delicato test for rabbit's blood. If rabbit's blood be now added to the serum of the altered blood the mixture becomes opaque and reddish in colour. This reaction will not take place if the animals are not closely related according to our ideas of classification arrived at on other grounds. And it is noteworthy that the test does not distinguish between the blood of the man-like apes and man. The inference here then, is that they are con nected by ties of the closest relationship, and one more proof is piled on the already great heap.

Then again, it has been found that many diseases thought to be peculiar to man are capable of attacking the great apes, and experiments in that direction are still in progress.

The gap between man and the existing. lower animals is rapidly widening, We have seen that one species of the connect- ing forms, Pithecanthropus, has disappear- ed. The lower races of man-are-dying out, and no doubt the man-like apes will soon all cease to exist. Nowhere has it been found possible, either in tropical. or temperate climates, to keep them long alive in captivity. Two or three years seems to be the limit of their life under these conditions, and none of the larger apes have yet bred in confinement, and breed. ing is the absolute test of success in this. direction.

SIR, -I have been asked by Mr E. C. Wilks to further correct my recently issued appeal on behalf of the St. Andrew's Kowloon Church Furnishing Fund.

It seems that I was in error in ascribing to Mr Wilks personally, the installation of the electric lighting; what he really under- took was

The party were expected back from Tung Wa by the evening of the 19th, but before that time arrived our informant had left for Hongkong, so consequently he did not meet the party on their return. It was generally expected that the wounds inflicted on the two gentlemen-though serious- were not sufficient to cause death, but grave danger was still apprehended. If the antiseptics applied at Tung Wa were effec- tive it was considered probable that the worst danger had passed, though under the most favourable circumstances the recovery of both gentlemen must be regard ed as tedious, if not doubtful.

The foregoing is the generally accepted account of the trouble, though a story is

Thun, calcium car we parked, gives acetylene. bide, s while aluminium eacbide furnishes a quite different substancy, torined methane, or marsh gue better known by minor under the dreaded name of “tire dæmp recently an enterprising firm of manufactur ing chemists at St. Alban, in France, has succeded in producing a carbide which, when treated with water, evolves a gas well known to chemists as ethylene, or This reaction is not so ointiant. important in itself as in the use which the frm ukes of it The ethylene obtained from the carbide is pumped into a vessel containing sulphuric acid with which it then combines chemically. The resulting pound, when treated like the carbide with water, decomposes into a mixture of alcohol and sulphuric acid, from which the alestol is removed by distillation, and so obtained puro, while the sul phuric acid is left behind, and can be used tronet with more ethlene. At the same time, the metallic oxide obtained when the carbide is noted on by water just what the manufacture requires to heat up again in the electric furnace so as to make more curbide. In this process, therefore, there are no waste products, the metallic oxide and the acid being simply used over and over again. Here, then, we have a means of continuously producing alcohol, without wasting either grapes, malt or sugar, the only raw materials which are not used twice being the charcoal and water, which go to make the alcohol itself. It is expect-

Com

ed that the new process will form a cheap

and easy way of producing alcohol. It is

to be hoped that the patentees are right in their anticipation, for cheap, puro alcohol been a desideratum alike for the analyst Our and the chemical manufacturer. readers will have noticed that the name of the metal from which this new carbide is The prepared has not been mentioned. reason is 16 'simple one, viz., that, in view of the probable commercial importance of the new discovery, the firm has kept

the name of the metal a secret.

PURITY. Its source is amid bard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contact with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rock-hewn tunnel and concrete aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure, where, without pumping, balling, or touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed In cases for shipment; thus, from its initial source protecting the water against possible tain of any kind. Percolating through) several stenta of virgin rock, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and no chemical skill can duplicate the living Tanah any more then the laboratory can evolve a living tree.

ABOUT MANNERS.

· Do not treat your father as a complete fool. Remember that, uglem your mother is an American, it is probable that you have inherited your anusual brightness from him. Persuade your father to insure his life.

If your father has a good business, go into it. It will please Him, and you can always turn it into a limited liability com- pany after his death-unless, of course, it is paying. In that case, carry it on your- self and get the Baronetcy.

Do not deal in culture. A successful man has about as much need for culture as a frog has for feathers.

(Signed) S. EZEKIEL. Hongkong, June 22, 1976.

Mr Carnegie's rectorial addess at the JR WITH COT BE RESPON. University of St. Andrews, delivered laat BIBLE for any debts contracted by MR October, finda publication in the columns J. H. SOLOMON, who has left the firm of the May Popular Science Monthly. | from date. The addreas in a remarkably vigorous and sensible plea for international peace as against the foulest blot that has ever disgraced the earth, the killing of civilized men by men, like wild beasts, as a permissible mode of settling

*

International disputes." The speaker onu merates the many miligations of the evils of war adopted during recent decades, but sees a lamentable step in the opposite di rection in the comparatively now ides that one nation may allowably strike another in the midst of negotiatns, without waiting for any formal declaration of war. This new method, he says, "belongs to the in- fernal armoury of assassins hired to kill or poison opposing generals, of forged des patches, poisoned wells, agreements made to be broken, and all those diabolic weapons which for very shame men have been forced to abandon as too infamous even for the trade of man-slaying." In the difficulty of obtaining recruits, experienced in both England and America, he finds a very en couraging mark of progress, indicating "the influence of education upon the masses in evolving clearer ideas of responsibility for their actions." From John Jay he quotes the sentiment that "Our country, right or "in "rebellion against God, and Wrong treason to the cause of civil and religions Hborty, of justice and humanity."

THE MISSIONARIES AND CHINA.

An Important Interview.

In view of the fact that missionaries in China are eo frequently accused of being the "ause of uprisings against foreigners, aaya The Nation (New York), an inter- view between the Chinese e mmissioners and representives of eighteen different Protestant English missionary societies in London on April 7 is important. Sir T. Fowell Buxton presented an illumi. nated address, of which the object was to impress upon the commissioners the true motives and aims of the societies, so that they might on their return use their indu- ence to dissipate misunderstandings in re gard to them. They had no political or commercial interests, and they "expressly direct their missionaries not to interfere with the internal politics of China, care- fully to respect the administration of civil law, and not to seek the conferment of so- cial datus for themselves or extra-terri- torial privilege for their converts. The missionaries have deplored and opposed all action which has fostered the spread of the oplum babit, and all things which have been prejudicial to the best interests of The address closed with a grate- China, ful acknowledgment of the kindness and courtesy of many high officials, and espe- odally of invaluable services rendered dur ing the Boxer disturbances. Duke Trai tee aaid in response that the interview to him was "o sign that the whole British nation is well disposed towards my country, and I can assure you that this good feeling is reciprocated on our side."

are severe paints in the joints and muscles, often accompanied by inflammation swelling. Sometimes the paina shift about from joint to joint and limb to limb. In severe cases the joints become stiff and the patient feels as if partially paralysed. The use of Rheumatism is a poisonous acid in the blood. Dr Williams Pink Pilla have cured thousands of cases of Rheumatism, often in its most severe form. The reason why they are so successful as a remedy for Rheumatism is because their action is on the blood. They drive the poisonous acid Company's Steamship out of the body; they purify and strengthen the blood: they make new rich red blood. Advocate D. Hormuji of Myingyan, Burma, was aflic ed for over eight years wih Rheumatism in a very bad form. To-day he is well. Dr Williams' Pink Pills cured him. This is the story as told from his own lips :-

It was during a visit to Katha in Upper Burma somo eight or nine years ago that I first fell sick with Rheumatism,' said Advocate Hormusji. I was then confined to bed for six months. From that time onward the Rheumatism continued to return, and as the Doctors and medicines in Burma failed to cure me I at last went to Bombay to get medical treatment there, But the relief given me by Bombay doctors was lit le if anything better than that was which I had obtained in Burma: it was 6, only temporary, and I was beginning to despair of over getting cured when one of my medical advisers in Bombay recom- mended me to try Dr Williams' Pink Pille for Pale People. I took his advice and bought some of these Pills. The very first bottle gave me great relief, and after eon-On tining their use for a little while longer I found myself oured,

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis

of observations taken by means of an au

tomatio tide-recording machine in the Wa

ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsul during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches bolow mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide 1684 gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont 1581 Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to
