FIGHT ON A LINER.
An Englishman Killed.
When the new linor, “Kaiserin Augusta Victoria," the largest vessel afloat, reached Dover on her maiden trip to New York, details of an affray which occurred at Ham- burg were obtained. According to an eye- witness the incident was due to a quarrel between English and seamen and stokera and it was a sequel to the seamen's strike at Hamburg in connection with which about 1000 British sailors and firemen have been imported into the German port. This witness says that shortly after mid- night be heard cries and quarrelling, and, going to the scene, found a pitched battle going one mary of the men being, armed with knives and other implemente. Over 100 were pngaged, and in all directions men, stabbed or stricken into unconscious- ncas, were dropping to the deck. Two Englishmen, he says, were thrown over- board, and one of these was drowned.
After the fight had lasted about 20 minutes the officers succeeded in Recuring the ringlenders, and brought it to an end. It was then found that nine men were to badly wounded that they had to be sent to

Reuter's Belgrade correspondent, who has recently returned from a short visit fo Salonika after an interval of fourteen years, writes:-Compared with the town of those days, this important emporium of Macedonia has improved in many respects, though the progress,' like all progress in Turkey, has been exceedingly slow. The town has increased considerably in alza; houses have sprung up on all sides. Especi- ally is this so, along the Eastern shore, where practially a new quarter of fashion- able villas and gardens has come into being which could vie with those of any European provincial town.
:
While, however, the order and tran quillity in Salonika impress one favourably, the general state of the country in the interior leaves much, to be desired. Greek bands have been very active of late, though it must be said that the Turkish authorities

STRICTURE AND KIDNEY DISEASE.
J
How BEEN AFFECTED THE Kidney..
CURED 2 YEARS AGO - STILL WELL TO-DAY. 54, Brighton Place, Hampton Square,
Shoon Lane, Mortlake,
London, England. NOR nearly 19 years I suffered from
Friture and kidney disease, and
many a time have I laid on the bedroom Boor writhing in agony. Twice I have been in hospital and undergone operations for the stricture. Never, as long as I live, shall I forget what I went through then. The doctors said that I could not live another three months, yet I can truly say that, although two years bave passed since then, I was never better in my life than T am to-day.
Опе
My illness carne on in this way, day at my work I strained my back, and afterwards I suffered from severe cutting: paios, just over where the kidneys are, especially when I stooped. I could not sleep well at nights, and there were dis- tressing urinary disorders. I was miserable and out of sorts, and although the doctor did all he could for me, I got worse instead of better. If I had a glass of beer it irrita ted my kidneys so much that I had to keep
to my bed for a week, but 'sin'e using
Doan's Backache Kidney Pills I can enjoy
my glass without feeling a bit the worse for
It.
It wasn't until I had finished the fourth box of Doan's Pills that they seemed to be doing me any good, but I persisted with the medicine, and with the fifth box there was a decidedly free soon of the bladder. No other medicine had ever helped me at all, and you can imagine how delighted I was at this relief. For six months I continued with Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, and then I was entirely oured of the stricture and kidney disease. From that day to this there hasn't been any sign of the old complaints roturning.
My suffering and my cure are well-known to hundrede of men I have worked with in Löndön, und Tam sure that knd, I not used Doan's Backache Kidney Pille when I did, I should never have lived.

TANSAN SAVOY
PURE, Exquisite in Flavor, Stimula- ting without R. action, this life-giving, Natural Mineral-Water gushes out of the mountain-side at Takaradeka, near Kobe, Japan.
PURITY. Its source is amid hard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contact with ans human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rook-hewn tunnel-and odmerete aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure, where without pumping, bailing, or touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in cases for shipment; thus, from its initial source protecting the water against possible talot of any kind. Percolating through several strata of virgin rock, It is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and ng choloal skill can duplicate the living Tansan any more then the laboratory can aydive a living tree.
FLAVOR. Tausan gladdens the palate. with a zest peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taste smacks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged in.
TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blende with spirits, wines, stout, milk, and other liquors without altering the natural flavor, axcept to unfold i'
STIMULUS. Tansan is refreshful, and, by resson of its native qualities, it excites the appetite and stimulates the nutritive functions It is persistently regulative without being laxative, and it ominates from the problem of life the almenta attributable to the liver and Lidpega.
The supply is inexhaustible, being an oron dow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tansan, so that it will be forover free from the obnoxious Taste poouliar to all palted and fabricated waters. One of Mr Burbank's ideas will find pro- nounced favour with the youngsters. He holds that no cluld should go to school before it is ten years old. But the most important thing for the child to bear in mind is the absolute necessity for a dis- creet choice of parents. Many people in this world, Mr Burbank inferentially says, owe the ills that afflict them to their carelessness in this connection. Seriously, however, Mr Burbank thinks that there is a great similarity between the organisation and development of plants and human beings. In both, he says, the crossing of species

A GANG ROBBERY,
A Receiver Gaoled,
At the Criminal Sessions this morning, before His Lordship the Chief Justice, Cheung You was indicted on a charge of receiving stolen property..
The Attorney General prosecuted and the accused pleaded not guilty. The following jurors were then sworn :--Messrs A. Jenkins, J. Gittings, E. O. R. Voll. brecht, J. A. Young, S. M. Thorne, O. Staeger and C. J. F. Neitol.
The Attorney General stated that the prisomer had been committed for trial on a charge of armed robbery from a junk but that he (the speaker) had reduced that charge to one of receiving stolen property. Unless he could satisfactorily explain how he came into possession of the goods found on board his junk a few days after they
had been stolen by a gang of armed rob- bers from another junk the jury would be justified in finding him guilty.
Evidence was led and verdict of guilty
returned.
The accused was sentenced to three

water through their trunks against the buckets of a Pelton wheel; and besides we have no means of calculating the force of such a jet, and could not conscientiously cular time, when animal strongth is being recommend the method! At this parti everywhere replaced by mechanical motive power, to the great advantage of our friends the domestic animals, the idea of bitching elephants to a dynamo-is at least queer, Let us hope, for the sake of these sympathetic pachyderms, that the humor of the editor of Engineering will ward off from them this orucl burden."

THE ALIENS' “ HOME.'
Europe's Gift to England.
A return of the alien passengers brought to the United Kingdom from ports in Europe, or within the Mediterrancan Sea, during the first three months of this year, has beer issued in the form of a Parlia montary paper under the Aliens Act.
The number of aliens who arrived during those 13 weeks was no fewer than 64,016. Of this appalling' number, 36,216, it is true, posed as "transmigrants "— ie, had prepaid through tickets, and in respect of whom security had been given that they were going to places outside the United King dom. Also another 1238 openly showed the immigration officers that they desired to land in the United Kingdom only for the purpose of going within a reasonable time to some destination out of the United Kingdom. Assuming, nowever, that all these aliens did leave as they protested-a very large assumption, in point of fact- these figures still mean that within January. February, and March the alien population of the United Kingdom was increased by 46,664 men, women, and children. And this makes no account of the undesirable criminals and other who feared the effect of the Aliens Act, and travelled hither by cabin?
The authorities try to put the best face that they can on this most unpleasant return, for they add a footnote to the effect that it may be taken that aliens who declared that they were going elsewhere, and the transmigrants, "with a few excep- tions," and certain aliens who to the num- bor of 878 held return tickets, and who to the number of 2487 registered themselves as seamen, have loft the United Kingdom. They give no reason why we should take this bald assertion of theirs, or how they arrive at the knowledge, and even they are compelled to declare with respect to the remainder no information is available as to their intentions or movements,"
The total number of aliens who were finally refused permission to stay in this country was 188, but leave to land was refused in all in 411 cases, and against these decisions 395 appealà were made, with the result that in 243 cases leave to land was subsequently given."
The number of orders expelling aliens from the United Kingdom in January was one, in February 19, in March 27.
Mongkong Tidos.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office In London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zoro of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sos level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dook, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table,
Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
