WOMEN AS DONS.
Why Not?
Women
"Sir," said Dr Johnson, preaching is like a dog walking on his hind lega. It is not done well, but you are sur- prised to find It done at all."
!
Had the dear doctor, who on the whole was "fair," as school giria say, to the opposite sex, lived to be acquainted with women lecturers, professors, and preachdra of our age, he would have admitted that not only was "it done," but done passing- well."
When women take up any profesion that is out of the common they usually. aoquit themselves splendidly, because they have special gifts forcing them in the 'chison direction, and they never lack onthusiasm.
Some people object to women becoming professors on the ground that it is un. feminine so to do. An unfeminine career means merely a career which women should out follow. The woman don would pro- bably put it in this way:-To say that women should not be professors because it
is unfeminine is the same thing as saying
that women should not follow the career of a professor because they should not. It is. In fact, our old friend "petitio principii's -the assuming of the conclusion to be proved, and then the employment of it, in disguised form, as one of the promises whereon the conclusion bangs,
That it is "unfeminino" then is obviously
no reason why women should be kept from perhaps the most conservative of all careers -that of University Don. The only valid objection is that suggested by Dr Johnson, that “It is not done well,”
The only way to see how women **shape“ sa dona is to give them a trial. The eyes. of interested fomininity are turned towards Madame Curie. How will she succeed as the expounder to mixed audiences of one of the exact sciences-chemistry On her popularity as professor the advancement of many women in learned careers rests.
Madame Curle is the first woman Profes. sor of Chemistry in the world.
England has appointed no women profes. apra as yet. It is not the depth and accuracy of woman's knowledge that is doubted, it is her fitness and ability-bor |"right," in short, to command an assembly | of university students.
Sonia Kovalevsky (a Russian) about 20: years ago made such wonderful progress in mathematics that the Continental professors. admitted they could teach her nothing. further. No university would employ, ber on account of her sex Finally, Stockholm University, although it had no women atudents, offered her the chale of mathem-
■tica. She acted as professor with great honour, and the 10th anniversary of her appointment was made the occasion of a grand celebration.
Scientists have been glad to avail them. 2181 selves of women's help, especially when
they could find it at their own hearth There was Miss Herschel, who helped her brother so unflaggingly. In more modern times there was Professor Hussey, who toured the world, on commission from the. Lick Observatory, and visited Australia a year or two ago. His assistant in his Australian researches was his wife. She always "planted the stations" for him. Professor Hussey was testing various tem Engperatures throughout the world with a view -

PURITY. Íts source is amid "hard volcanic rock, beyond reach of contact with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rock-hewn, tunnel and concrete aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure, where, without pumping, bailing, touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in cares for shipment; thue, from its initial source protecting the water against possible talnt of any kind. Percolating through several strata of virgin rook, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and no chemical skill can duplicate the living Tansan any more then the laboratory can evolve a living tree.
FLAVOR. Tansan gladdens the palato with a zest peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taste emacks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged lo,
TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blends' with spirits, wines, atout, milk, and other liquors without altering the natural favor, except to unfold it.
STIMULUS, Tansan is freshful, and, by reason of its native qualition, it excites the appetite and stimulates the nutritive functions. It is persistently regulative without being laxative, and it eliminates from the problem of life the Bilments attributable to the liver and kidneys.
The supply is inexhaustible, being an oven flow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tangan, so that it will be forever free from the obnoxious taste peculiar to all salted and fabricated waters. Visitors to the Spring find the entire plant open to inspection there nothing to conceal.

His Excellency the Governor explained the Financial minutes. The first, for the erection of addition quarters for nurses at the Government Civil Hospital, was rather less last year than anticipated and con- sequently was rather more this year. The work has now been completed at a cost of $29,101, against the estimated $26,000- saving of 8:899. The next minute includ- ed the sum of $400, meals for prisoners in cells. This oxcess was due to the large number of doportees from Saigon and Sing apore, for whom meals had to be provided. It was proposed to recover the amount from the governments of the Straits Settlements and of Indo-China. The same minute in- cluded the sum of $800, Secret Service. wicket to fall. And the wicket fell, the Reprinted from the Uhina Mail. To be last man being caught in attempting to lift Kermode for the winning hit. Lancashire thus won by one run. It was an exciting half-hour's play, and recalled the contest at the Oval in August, 1894, when Lancas hire and Surrey made a tie. The play of the Lancastrians throughout the match left much to be desired, both as regards batting and bowling, whilst the fielding was not above criticisms.
Against Leicestershire the Surrey XI scored 483 (Hayward 136, Hayes 155 and Hobbs 79.) In this match u player was given put for hitting the ball twice.
