It arouses interesting speculations for the future to think of these young Chinese, now imbibing new ideas, realising the difference between their country and the civilised world, and tasting the knowledge that has raised the West and Japan to their present prosperity.
ORGANISATION AND MILITARY SPIRIT. Another striking feature is the degree of organisation shown. Primary schools are started by the local gentry and villageelders;- elementary schools by the officials of the district, who faise the funds from the tion halls, and from duties on articles of endowments of old temples and examina
local consumption. TER
teachers are trained in a normal college at Pouting.fu,- under Japanose instructors. In the higher schools the masters are, as rule, ex students of the old Tientsin University..

to learning by heart rather than to compre-j hension. However, the most serious ten- denoy is a disregard for thoroughness, a desire to "rush" education, to rest con- a spirit tent with superficial results: bred by the same causes as his eager. ness for the new education. Many of the students have toiled through the classical course, and they are unwilling to settle down to another long period of study. In their eyes education is to be sought as an avenue to official position. Their wish, therefore, is to hurry through the course as rapidly as possible. This spirit i

It remains to be seen if their confidence in their infallibility will be justified, or if, in their impatience, they wreck the development which they are suxious to promote.
GENERAL KONDRATENKO'S
DIARY.
The Truth About Port Arthur.
General Kondratenko's widow has 27- plied in person to the Tear to have search When nade for her husband's diary. General Kondratenko died in Port Arthur, the little house, in which he luid lived during the siege was closed and sealed up. When the Japanese entered Port Arthur, their admiration of the "Hero of Port Was so sincere that they left his Arthur " house untouched; however, when the house trade of General was opened Inter, no Kondratenko's diary could be found. Quite recently, Madame Kondratenko, received the information from Japan that the diary of her late husband had been found in a cellar during the rebuilding of the little house in Port! Arthur. It is believed that the Japanese Government will restore the diary to the famous Russion General's widow, although, as far as is known at present, that lady has no intention of publishing her husband' interesting record of the siege of Port Arthur,

BILE BEANS EFFECT A CURE
ILE BEANS have once again demons- trated their superiority, over medical skill. An English Lady, Mrs Ann Maria Jeffs, at Frankley, Worcester, suffered so severely from constipation which doctors' failed to relieve, that she was regarded as incurable. Bile Beans, however, succeeded where all other remedies had failed, and Mrs Jeffa once more enjoys the blessings of good health. Speaking of her sufferings and cure, she says:-
For three years I suffered scutely from constipation, which brought on lassitude, and over-powering drowsiness. At times the pains I experienced after taking food were so bad that I actually fasted for three days, to avoid them. I was always dull and heavy, and suffered-from-headaches and awful depression.
A local doctor was. consulted, but I obtained no results from his medicines, and My condition continued to get worse. eventually became so critical that my hus band and friends thought my days were numbered.
'Nothing would stay on my stomach- not even a drop of beef tea or little boiled milk; and as no nourishment could be put In my system, I wasted away to a mere shadow.
My husband heard of Bile Beans, and 1 регве- as a last hope we got a supply. vered with them, and the fact that they were going to cure me soon became clear, Soon after beginning to take them I passed The passing of two great gall stones. these gave me great pain, but when the pain subsided my bowels became easier and the constipation let me altogether. Every week I go better, the ailments I had. suffered from disappeared, and in the end
I was completely restored to health.
I met my doctor while the cure was in He asked the cause of my im- progress. provement, and when I told him he said
If Bilo Boana have made this wonderful change in you, by all means continue them, Another day I was stopped by ou sminister, who, on hearing what had cured sue, said ・・・ The change is so wonderful: it is your duty to write to the Bile Bile Co. and thank them. Bile Beans are now our family medicine.
The above sensational case proves con clusively that, Bile Beans can cure the worst cases of stomach and intestinal dia order. They are equally effective for debility, billousness, constipation, piles, nervousness, ungems, fomalo ailments, weakness, pains in the back, aleeplessnÉGE, Joss of appetite, congestion of the liver, headache, flatulence, pimples, and skin eruptions. Obtainable from all medicine vendors. Price 75 cents (Mex.) per bottle,

TANSAN' SAVOY
PURE, Exquisite in Flavor, Stimula. ting without ft action, this life-giving, Natural Mineral Water gushes out of the mountain-side at Takaradzka, near Kobe, Japan.
or
PURITY. Its source is amid hard volesnio rook, beyond reach of contact with any human being, and it is conveyed by gravity through a rook-hewn tunnel and conorote aqueduct to a sheltered enclosure,.. where, without pumping.
bailing, touch of human hand, it is placed by machinery in sterilized bottles and packed in cases for shipment; thus, from its initial source protecting the water against possible tsint of any kind. Percolating through Heveral strata of virgin rock, it is saturated with their unsullied-mineral properties, and no chemical skill can duplicate the living Tanan any more then the laboratory can evidro a living tree.
FLAVOR, Tansan gladdens the painte with a zest peculiar to itself, clean, crisp, novel, and delicious. Its appetizing taste amaoks of satisfaction, without savor of a feeling of fulness, however freely indulged 10.
TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blonds with spirits, wines, stout, milk, and other liquors without altering the natural flavor, except to unfold it.
STIMULUS. TADEU is refreshful, and, by reason of its native qualitica, it excites the appetite and stimulates the nutritive functiona. It is persistently regulative without being laxafive, and it eliminates from the problem of life the ailments attributable to the liver and kidneys.
The supply is inexhaustible, being an even flow, entirely independent of surface conditions of a wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tansar, so that it will be forover free from the obnoxious aate peculiar to all "alted and fabricsted waters. Visitors to the Spring find the entire plant open to inspastion" there in nothing to conceal.

As regards relief, nå får 44 I can gather the Provincial authorities have granted Taels 10,000, the Imperial authorities Tuels 20,000, and the Chi- nese guilda at Hankow Taels 85,000. These latter have sent their contribution mostly in ten cash pieces for distribution, It is to be hoped that this addition to the currency will not cause a further depreciation in that already greatly depreciated coin.
The president understood that the line washing question was to be dealt with by the Royal Commission, and advised that matters be loft as they were until a decision had boon given. The arrangement of the inspectors' work should be luff to the M. O. H.
The Secretary replied I have noted your instructions that the secretary should not make suggestions to the Board relating to the arrangement of the inspectors' work, May these papers now be circulated for a ruling from the Board in connection with limewashing procedure?

standing orders made by the Board as recently as December 1903 laying down that the M. D.
