Four thousand tons was her register, and she was "only, a year front the yards a big tramp with good fines, and up
to some fourteen knots an hour, with a clean bottom and good Welsli coal for her furnaces. She had practically been built for such work as this; she succeeded the
little convorted yacht with which our owners made so much money during the Cuban rebellion. The liple thing rested on the question whether the stranger who trailed the smoke of his foul furnaces athwart the pale sky were Russian. If so, we knew what we had to do.
With that coal," the 'old man' mur- mured, as he watched the black steamer, "and the foul bottom she's sure to have, we might do it."
He was obviously thinking of running for it, and there were certainly, some hopes. It is not everything on the seas that can compass fourteen knots, particularly, in those Eastern seas where good, clean coal. is a rarity The stranger had now come well up and one could make out, without - the aid of the glasses, the tracery of her top-hamper and the bulge of her casemates along her dark flank. There was even a spark that showed from the brass-work on her forward bridge, and with the telescope it was easy to make out the officers, five or six of them, who crowded it. The chief mate and myself shared the bridge with the skip- per, and attended his orders. It would not do to turn tail before it became manifestly necessary.
"There she shows," cried the skipper suddenly, ns a little beading climbed up to
herinninnst hend. He and the mate glued their glasses to it, and there was no
need to look up the code book for the meaning of the four flags that flapped out their message three miles to windward. We know them by heart already, and their purport was that we were to heave-to forthwith, while a search party boarded us or take the consequences.
"How's your head?" snapped the skipper, sharply. I hastened to give him the answer North and a half east." 2123 He jumped for the standard compass and took a chance ahead, "Nor by west," he ordered, and the quartermaster took up the play of the wheel, gave her a couple of spokes, and caught her dead on her new course. This brought her to a line parallel with that of the warship. "Now," said the skipper, "I'll trouble you to hoist the Red Ensign and nothing else, and Specimen.copy free on apolluation to 05p,King St.,Manchester, Eng. we'll see what that chap has to

THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 1906.
get it," was his answer, and at that very moment came the boom of the first gau, From her forward casemate on the star- board side a jet of groy smoke spouted suddenly and the dull report travelled across to us. The hands forward paused to mark it, and there was a rush to the rail to see what would now happen.
"That settles it, did the skipper. Mr, Second · Mate, I'll take charge. Where's Mao!" The chief had gone down to his engines, so the captain took the speaking-tube, and addressed him earnestly through it. None of your economical speed, if you please," I heard him saying. "I want every ounce. Blow the roof off your boilers, if it'll confort you, but steam I must have." The answer, of course was inaudible, but the skipper smiled as he hung up the tube, and took hold of the atandard binnacle again and watched the
course..
The Red Ensign was still flapping aloft, and old Mac's now steaming was not yet noticeable when the second gun spat from the warship's broadside....... No shell leaped athwart our bows, however it was blank second they were firing, so for; it was a summons, and no more, but that spouting
cannon away to port-was an awesome thing to have for a neighbour, and one thought with no cheerfulness of the time when they should be squirting-shell at us.
As officer
of the watch, I had my binoculars on her steadily, while the skipper fussed about the binnacle and drew lines with his damp finger on the glass of the chart frame.-- So
it happened that 1 saw her bow heave round, and the bulge of her port forward casemate come into view.
"She's changed her course, sir," I called. Has she?" answered the captain. Well, it's as easy as anything else, so we'll try it ourselves, and give her a run for her money. The wheel, there. Nor'west by west, and look lively."
M
He stared into the eye of the wind. I'd give quite 'n lot for a good thick white quall," he remarked. "I'd butt her into it at the top of her gait, and see if I couldn't lose that chap."
The change of course brought the warship dead astorn. She wallowed on after us with a generous wash of white about her bows, but it was impossible to see as yet to what extent, if any, she gained on us. Her funnels recked in a heavy scarf of moke that hung long in the air, and it was plain that they were firing up pretty actively in her stoke-holds. Her barbette guns soomed to cover us all the time; they sloped up from the squat turret as though on the point of lobbing a shell aboard of us which should blow its way through decks, cargo, and bottom. But down below: Mac was obviously not idle, for already there was the thrill of high pressure steam as we fled up wind, sud from our funnel, too, the smoko came blacker.
The skipper was alongside me at the wing of the bridge, with his glasses bear. ing aft. His steward had brought him up his greatcoat; his cap was jammed down hard on his grey head, and he swung easily to our lift and little roll as he hold the pur- suer in view,
"I think we can keep our distance," he said, as he lowofed his binoculars. He was fingering the inscribed plate that decorated them as he spoke. “Board of Trade gave me these for saving life at sea," he remark- ed, turning up the plate for me to see. Took the crew off a dismasted Russian barque. I wonder if that brute would haul off if he knew it. But I guess we won't-say, see what's coming."
One of the great barbette guns had open- ed on us, and its smoke hid the bow of the warship from sight for the moment. For my part, I clutched the bridge rail' în a spasm of expectation; disaster scemed to he loosed upon us. It seemed that the shell whistled alongside us with consciousness of its mission; it screamed stridently as it passed, and flung into the water half a mile shead with a leap of spray. Thon, and not before, the report ran down to us, the voice of the gun that had already missed its shot.
You can bellow," roured the skipper, shaking his fist aft, "and bellow and bellow you brass-bound calf; but if you can't shoot better than you can steam, you are going to have a trifle of annoyance. He crossed to the engine-room speaking- tube, and called down to the Chief, '.
11
"D'ye hear that?" he shouted. If you can't crawl along a bit livelier, we'll be getting one or two of them pellets aboard of us. The chances are against them missing all the time, you know. What's that you say? Unforeseen emergencies be sugared. Whack her up, man."
"There was a lot more of it, but it became gross in the end. The ship astern fired three or four times before fourteen knots and a bit over began to tell, Her plates must have been like a hanging garden for she travelled Bluggishly though her funnels poisoned the sky. But by the afternoon it was plain we were drawing ahead, and when four bells went in the afternoon watch, the sky ahead was darkening with a squall. The skipper: As the first to see it. He had been talking cheery nonsense and humorous wrath all the time, and how he shifted his helm & point and börkt for that squally like an armadillo. It met us grandly." One minute there was a sinart breeze that carri ed our smoko off in snatched shreds; the next the rain stamped vehemently on our iron decks, and the wind came shouting..
Right bonny weather," yelled the ekipper across the wind, and looking istern, I saw the squall run down and emudge the warship out of the picture. Where she had been weltering at our tail, a black outline of a thing, there was now screen 624 rain and a grey indistinctness of wind Even na it wiped her out of sight, her great gun whooped again, and the shell whizzed up, raving, to drop into the water mot a dozen fathome from our tail.
In the thick of it, we shifted holm again,; arid rammed away due north, while Mac's engines rumbled their hest,od, that engineer called pessimistic prophecies up the tube. An hour later it was clear evon- ing again, with a quiet moonless night drawing on quicklynul our pursuer was half hull-down on the horizon astern.
The skipper shut up his bihooulars and spat his chowed cigar board, It's Wearing,
ho said,
work is, but IÚ grant you there's interest in if You can He your course, Mr Mate; nor by east it'll bo till morning."
He pausal at the head of the ladder and looked backs But say doesn't it give you the creeps to think what it would be like if the Old Country were at war, and wo had twenty-knot commerce destroyers to dodge, instead of those old cisterna ??

Percolating through Reveral strata of virgin rock, it is saturated with their upsullied-mineral properties, and no, chemical skill can duplicate the living Tanaan any more then the laboratory can evolve a living tree.

TANSAN is Nature's own distillation, and because of its absolute purity it blends with spirita, wines, stout, milk, and other Liquors without altering the natural River, except to unfold it.
STIMULUS. Tansan is refreshful, and, by reason of its native qualities, it excites the appetite and stimulates the It is persistently nutritive fur clions, regulative without being luxsive, nolit eliminates from the problem of life the Ailments attributable to the liver kidney..

The supply is inexhaustible, being an even flow, entirely independent of surface conditions of wet or dry season, and there will never be necessity nor excuse for the artificial manufacture of Tangad, so that it will be forever free from the obnoxious taste peculiar to all "alted and fabricted waters. Visitors to the Spring find the entire plant open to inspection hething to comeal.

A Challenge.
W, Bethune, ex-champion hammer thrower of New South Wales, wishes to challenge any man in the Far East to meet him for any stake in competition in the following events:-Throwing the 161b hammer; tokaing the caber; weight lifting; scratch pulling (one hand); and tug-of-war on battens. In the first item Mr Bothune will concede his opponent 20 feet. The challenger is a man of 5 feet 10 inches in height, weighs 13 stone, and is 38 years of age.
