of the Aine ien omblue. The PURVEYOR TO HIS MAJESTY KING
Cunard Compung, rofusing to be included
in the combine, was supported by the Go-
vernment, who has financed the Company in
the construction of these vessels, which aro
to surpass any others in existence. Of the
EDWARD
AND TO
immense proportions of these new liners HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS
Mr Talbot saya :—
"They will each be approximately 800 ft. in length, 88 ft. wide, by dft. deep. They will displaca 43,400 tons, and in order to obtain the minimum speed of 244 ots per hour, the gigantic turbines will develop Home 80,000 hores-power. If stood on end beside St. Paul's Cathedral they would tower to twice the height of that edifico. while if flosted beside it the top of the masts would almost reach to the dóme of the building."
The record spoed in knots per hour, at present bald by the German ships ** Deuts. ghland" and "Kaiser Wilhelm 11." at 23 6, will in their case he 25, and when they settle down to their work it is expected that their spoed will be nearer
20 than 25 knots. They have been named the "Mauritania" and "*Lusi- taoia."
The former is built at the Clyde Bank Works of Messrs John Brown & Co., the latter at the Wallsend shipyards of Messrs Swan, Hunter & Co. At Clyde Bank the work is uncovered, at Wallsend the ship is built in a covered shed. A fo other features of interest may be here
given :-
"The most important structural element
the double buttom, which is 5ft. 6in. in depth between the outer and inner shells. The rudder weighs 70 tons complete and has a stock 26in. in diameter. The total weight of the stern frame, brackets, and rudder is approximately 220 tona. In transporting the frame from the foundry at Darlington to the water's edge at Middles- brough the framo projected over the side of the special waggou to such an extent that three sets of rails were required. Portions of stations and signal posts had to be temporarily removed to permit the load to paas.
The first-class dining saloon extends the full width of the ship, 80ft., end is 125ft. long, and will seat 500 persons: -
The ship will have accommodation for 600 first-class, 500 second.class, and soine 1,200 third class passengers. The crew will number 800, so that with a full com plement the vessel will become a fosting hotel, carrying 3,000 souls. By the system of lifte pas-etigers will be able to reach any deck, quickly and easily.'
11
The anchoring cables have been subjected to a tension of over 370 tons, 90 per cent. in excess of the breaking strain imposed by
the British Admiralty, the greatest tensile strain ever applied to a cable.
American Insurance Companies.
Mr Haldeman, late manager of the Mutual Life Insurance Society of Now York, is now the joint-manager of the North British and Mercantile, and this British Company offers to take over the interests of the British policy-holders in the Mutual Life, which are estimated at nine millions sterling. The British Com- mittee of the Mutual Life supports the proposal; but the press in London advisos caution.

The New York Times regards it an a monstrous proposition that poss.ssion of property beyond an arbitrary amount to be fixed by Congress shall be an offence Bgainst society deserving of punishment by
taxation.
The New York Herald says that the osed tax would require an amendment to the Constitution, and there is therefore no need to take the matter seriously,
The World, whose propietor is any times a millionaire, considers that M Roosevelt has made, an important step for ward, and quotes the example of progressive European Governinents in the matter of income-tax and inheritance tax, thus sup | porting the principle that wealth should| contribute generously to the public need.

SCRATCH RACI
To morroir of tornison a seratch race will be contested by members of the Vistoria Recreativo Club, in which four boats will take part.
The race will be over the three quarter mild course at Yaumati and it is sotfested that a close struggle will be witnessed. Owing to the unfav urable weather training has had to be relinquished to a great extent but in this respect all crow have suffered alike, consequently they will go to the start in approximately the same condition. In enpsequence of lack of training a well rowed ra o is not to be expected Witchell's crow, as usual, is favourite, though there are many who are inclined to pin their faith to Lammert's four. J. Alves has a crow which will row well, but N. H. Alves' quartette does not appear to be anything formidable. All things being equal Lammert's crew should win, with Witchell's or J. Alver' second, There should be little to probably Alves choose between the first three hoats, bowoyer.
Swimming.
that the V.R.C. have held their Annual meeting and the new committee elected, it is pr byble that a swimmning fete will be arged within the course of the Det mouth or so,
The room hisn Yacht Club have secured a house at for bathing purp`ises and mem bere are tonlig forward to some pleasant Gulings I might be mentioned that the Corinthians are going to enter a team for the Water Polo Competition this year, and although they do not expect to defeat the V. R. C.'a best, they hope to make a good showing in this dire tion.
If more outside team entered the Water Polo Competition it would be better. Last year there were Fix teams-two from the R. G. A., one from the Yacht Club, and three from the V. R. C. The Yacht Club team showed comtlerable improvement as the Competition progressed and they should do much better this soison.
R. G. A. teams also improved considerably.
The Gymkhana.
The third Gymkhana of the season will be held on Saturday, June 16, should the wether permit. An interesting progammo † bas hoor arranged by the Committee, as follows:-
ONE MILE AND A QUARTER FLAT RACE. Handicap. For all China Ponies. winning Jockeys allowed 6 lb.
