THE SIMPLE LIFE.
Wild Man of Northampton.
Peterborough is again excited about the strange doings of the "wild man of North. amptonshire" harmless person who sleeps in the meadows, and lives on berries, turnips, and a weird brew of cowslip tes. His 'name' is John Churchin, and bla age about 60.
Some months ago he was taken before the magistrates of the. Liberty of Peter | borough on a charge of sleeping out without ricible means of subsistence. The police declared that for over a year, winter and summer alike, he had lived in the meadows near Peterborough, sleeping under the hedges, and subsisting on berrica, raw por. atoes, mangolda and turnips. Churchin admitted everything, but pleaded that ha had the permission of the farmers to live on their land, that he did no harm to any body. Out of charity, the magistrates committed Churchin to Northampton Gaol, Having duly served his sentence, he has now returned to his meadows, his turnips, and his cowslip tea.,
The Standard A correspondent of recently sought him out to inquire what were his motives for leading this Ro binson Crusoo sort of life. Churchin, s patriarch clothed in several coats, with the hair and beard of a Rip Van Winkle, replied that he sleeps under the stars be- cause he is a work on

CONSTIPATION'S RAVAGES.
BILE BEANB A CERTAIN REMEDY.
THE OPINION OF A GREAT PHYSICIAN.
AT celebrated physician, the late Sir Andrew Clark, expressed the firm opinion that constipation was the cause of one half of the ailments from which women It fills the blood with and girls suffer. impurities, robs the system of energy, causes piles, headache, biliouaness, skin Bruptions, and a host of other disorders. For these disorders, and for their root cause (constipation), Bile Beans are un. equalled.
Mrs S. Williams, of Longhope, Glouce ster, England, has proven this. For fully twenty years. She says 'I was a martyr to constipation. It brought on piles and biliousness, robbed me of appetite and enérgy, and made my life a burden to me, Many a weary day bave. I spent weighed down with a feeling of utter wretchedness, and not caring whether I lived or died. Doctors? Yes I tried several, but no amount of doctoring seemed capable of affording me the slightest relief: and by degrees I grow weaker and weaker.

March 17, 1886. Sir-When Mr Winston Churchill first became Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, he explained to an interested world that he had accepted his humblè position" because it would give him “an opportunity of keeping an eye upon Mr Chamberlain," thus implying that the opportunity of criticising a political oppo- nent. Was more important in his eyes than
Empire. I assure that this self-imposed share in the government of the British
mission accounts for the rather impertinent letter to which you refer in your leading article to-day.

I am not seriously concerned with Mr Churchill in his new character as a politica! Mr Turveydrop and Professor of Parlia mentary Deportment, but for the benefit of bia unknown correspondent, I ask you to allow me to point out that the position of the Opposition in this matter is not as inconsistent as Mr Churchill supposes. Our view is that in present conditions no necessity exists for and that the question of Chinese labour, is Imperial interference, one that may properly be left to the free and unfettered discretion of the responsible

No. 2, Zetland in every year. Apparently the recent Street, flood has been a very big one, for it was reported that at Saichiu-which, by the way, is the native place of the Honourable Dr. Ho Kai, of your City - great damage has been done
In response to calls for help from that district, the charitable institutions have subscribed some Taels 5,000 for the relief of the sufferers by the flood. Yesterday, large consigments of rice were made to Saichiu District by the Charitable institu- tions. No doubt the people there have suffered from hunger brought about by the collapse of their houses,
In addition to the consignments of ric», the Charitable institutions have also went a large number of bags, with which it was intended to contain sand for the purpose of being deposited on the wides of these
■mbankments. This is no doubt a quick contrivance, but whether any property can be saved is not known.
!.
In the interior, houses of the poorer class are usually built of clay, made brick. shape, and dried in the sun. These houses seldom fail to collapse after a heavy fall- of rain, and to resist the flood is therefore out of question.

The so-called embankments are also built of the ordinary kind of clay obtained from the corn-fields or riversides. While they may help to keep in check any ordinary inundation, they are certainly not strong TBE Undersigned have received instruc enough to resist the force of floods such as the recent one.
In Fatshan, damage to a certain extent has been done, and in order not to bear too heavily on the charitable institution, which have been so busy in organising the San Francisco and other relief funds, the Provincial Government is reported to have forward Taels 5000 for the use of the Fatshan sufferers.
