The two deaths revealed a singularly touching story of domestic fidelity. Origin- ally-old Margherita came to her mistress to serve as cook and housemaid in the days when the Signora Berbero was comparative ly rich. Subsequently the latter lost all her money in a financial crash, and told Margherita that she had better soek an- other place. This the good woman rofused to do. Slio simply turned to, went out as charwoman, and in other ways earned money, all of which she made over to her mistress. After come years nows came of the death of Signora Berbero's brother in London. He left his

2181 sister a modest competency, but that she ever received it was entirely owing to the determination of Margherita, who spent four years in establishing her mistress's claim to the legacy. On this the two- women lived during their declining years.

RECORD PRICE FOR AN ORCHID.

One Plant Brings 1,180 Guineas.

:

At an orchid sale held at Meera Protheroe and Morris's rooms, Cheapside, Mesars Sanders and Sons, of St. Albans, paid £1,20710s. for a plant of the "Odon toglossum Crispum Pittisnum," consisting * of three bulbs with two leaves ́ and 】 one young break. This sum, said the auc- tioner, was & record price for a single orchid plant,

*

Another sonsations! "lot" was-ab "Odontoglossum Crispum F. K. Sander;” which, though only Gin. high, realised £840, or £120 per inch.

Romance attracted the bidding for the "Odontoglossum Crispum Persimmon," which was sold for 200 guincas. Some years ago an import r gave a handful of bulbs to a grower, who agreed to share the profits. To the surprise of both a Porsim- mon flowered and brought the lucky finder! and grower £500 Bach,

Other notable prices obtained were:- Two Odontoglossum Crispum Pittae, £420 ; three Odontoglossum Crispum Fearnley Sander, £315; one Odontoglossum Oris. pum Abner Hassall, £493 10s..

A MISCHIEVOUS PENNY.

A correspondent living at Meiford Mont- gomery-shire, posted to an Oswestry gentleman recently an envelope containing Buch matter as is usually allowed, if the

envelope flap be tucked in, for one half- penny. Afler the posting of the letter, another Meiford letter-writer, having no stamp, dropped his letter into the box unstamped, and at the same time dropped "matter with the a ponny in to "squaro Postmaster General: By some cruel fate the penny happened to fall into the tucked- in letter addressed to Oswestry, and when the box was cleared some kind-hearted official, no doubt thinking he was doing some one a good turn, fastened down the tucked-in flap to make the precious penny! quite secure,

The result was that the receiver had'

to pay five-pence on the letter. True, there was something in another penny nestling inside like a surprise packet, but even that left him fourpence to the bad and the Postmaster-General scooped in not only the Oswestry gentleman's five- pence but also twopence from some other person to whom the unstamped letter (to) pay for which the pepny was dropped in the box) was addressed!

Thus his Majesty's Government stood to gain sixpence all through that mischievous penny's trick at Meiford. It should, how-↑ ver, be added that the postal authorities, with their usual courtesy, did not hesitate to refund the fourpence charged on the Oswestry letter by which the recipient

AMOY, April 23. During a recent tiger hunt which took place in a region not far from here a female tiger was tracked into some thick bushes, from which the beaters tried to drive her by throwing stones. The tigress sprang out and seized one of them by the arm and threw him on the ground. At this moment one of the hunters (an officer from Hong- kong) raised his gun and shot the tigress, rescuing the beater from his unfortunate predicament. SHIPPING LEGISLATION.

Application to Foreign Ships.

LONDON, March 21. Mr Lloyd George, President of the Board of Trade, has introduced into the House of Commons & Merchant Shipping Acta Amendment Bill. The bill was read the first time last night, and was very favour ably received.

12

The measure applies the British regula tions respecting overloading and unses worthiness, stowage of grain, and the use of life-saving appliances to foreign ships.

Mr Lloyd George admitted that British. shipowners were subjected to grossly un- fair foreign competition. He stated that the mercantile marine included 176,000 Britons, 39,000-aliens, and 42,00) lascara. If the engagement of foreign soamen ̧ was prohibited there would be a risk of ruining the industry.

The President of the Board of Trade described lascars as intelligent, sober, courageous, hereditary seamen and British subjects, who, being deprived by us of their coastal trade, claimed a place in our mer 3rd Class £22, 0.0.cantile marine. It was intended to insist that 91, 0.0. foreigners on British ships should satisfy the Board of Trade that they understood English words of command.

Sandakan's Harbour Trade. The report on the harbour department at Sandakan, British North Borneo, during the year 1905, shows that the shipping entered totalled 126;575 tons, an increase on 1904 of 10,866 tona-gross. This was however largely due to an extra 8,000 tons, men of war. Two new boats the "Darvel" and "Marudu" were placed on the station and the coasting trade is in British hands, A tonnage of 792 was dealt with at one time or another on the ship way and a new decked in barge and a tongkang wore built and launched. The revenue from native boats and fisheries diminished, owing in the former case to the fact that many licenses were taken out in the Kinabatangan district. The total catch in the bay and deep sea fishery trade was about 42,000 pikuls. The report finally points out the necessity for better wharf provision.

ANTIQUARIAN'S DESPAIR.

Girl Spoils His Mummy.

Paris, Feb. 12.-There lives in the Boulevard de la Vilette an old gentleman of wealth and of antiquarian tastes. Among many specimens collected through many years was a mummy from Egypt, that of a daughter of one of the Pharaohs, which the old collector treasured with great care.

One day in his absence a serving maid determined to discover what was in the Undor her cluinsy mysterious casket. fingers the remains of the king's daughter crumbled to ashes. When the old col lector returned and found instead of his beloved princess a little heap of dust inclosed within the many linen bands, has rage mastered him, and, seizing a revolver, he shot the housemaid dead.

AN INDIAN EPISODE.

During a meeting of the Sanitary Board, a member produced a glass of dirty water which, he said, he had gathered personally from the foundations of the new Public Offices.

When the Wigwe

gathered in council (Grest Chiefs of a mighty race), There was one of the group sat silent, With dauntless, determined face." Till he rose with a glass of liquid, And turned on the waiting host, Who, lacking in comprehension, Rad tourmured in glee, "A toast.

"This water, observé, my brothers, *On Government-land was found; "It teems with mosquito larvae," (The decoction was handed round.)

"You will notice their mien ferocious, "As I hold them up to the light. "Please stir them up with your finger' Good gracious! Not 1! They bite!"

Pray, mark how they mouth and

gibber.

With impotent fury fraught; And each of these pesta rapacious "On Government laud was caught, "Do ye countenance this, my Brothers "Will we not have our own house swept

The great Chief rose to his fullest, (May blessings rest on his name!) And, waving his glass of water, Reproachfully muttored, "Shame!" And the other Chiefs that around him In the council their oars had thrust," Felt the truth of bis accusations, And murmured, "The Brave is just !" "Yes! true are the words he speaketh, "And his argument carrieth weight; "We must show by our own example "How we mean to improve our state." Then the Wigwam rose from its council And proudly they smote their breasts;. Yet the Brave in the Street inquires, Is it there that the matter resto 1
