CHINA AND AUSTRALIA.
Speaking at a dinner on board the Japanese steamship "Yawata Maro" last month Mr Yee Hing, a leading Chinese merchant at Sydney, took the opportunity of referring to the prospects of future trade between Australia and the East." He declared that the prospects were that China would become the maket of the world. The country was going to develop, | and Australia should have the markot. There were 420,000,000 people there, wanting raw material which Australis could produce. Not very long ago the Chinese people did not know anything
about Australian flour, and obtained their supplies from America, Now they know better, and found that the Australian flour was better than the American. In 1904 Australia had 64,570,000, bushels of wheat, but that would only allow three loaves per head of the Chinese people. Australia was no doubt a great country for the production of wool, but in 1804 only produced 831,000,000 pounds of wool, which was not more than aufficient to make one pair of trousers for each Chinaman- or, rather, to allow Zib, of wool towards

Princess Ena of Battenberg returned to London on March 10, after an absence of two months on the Continent. For the first time on English soil her Royal High- Dess was officially recognised as the betroth ed of King Alfonso, by the presence at Victoria Station of the Spanish Ambassador wreck, will have to be handed to the French cerned at his SALES ROOмs, No. 2, ZERI AND III-Life & AnnuityFrinde 18, 479,532 7 0
and the staff of the Spanish Embassy.
Her Royal Highness, with her. mother, Princess Henry of Battenberg, arrived at Dover from Calais in the afternoon by the Burbine Imer "Queen," and was given a hearty welcome from a great crowd of people, who had waited on the Admiralty Pier for some hours. The journey to London was made by special train over the South-Eastern and Chatham Company's lines. The arrival at Victoria was awaited
outside the barriers by a large number of members of the public, the event having created a great amount of interest, and the greeting accorded the Princess was one of enthusiasm. Rain was falling heavily, or doubtless the crowd would have been much larger.
The most interesting incident in connec tion with the home-coming was the pre! sence of the Spanish Ambassador. Im mediately the train came to a standstill Don Louis Pelo de Bernabe stepped into the royal saloon, and, bowing low, touched with his lips the hands of Princess Henry and Princess Enn in turn, at the same time expressing in a few words his respectful, hamago.

Princess Ena replied simply "I thank your Excellency," and stepped to the plat- form As she did so, the wife of the Second Secretary of the Spanish Embassy, Madame Padilla, and two other ladies, stepped forward to welcome her, and Her Royal Highness kissed each of the ladies. Bowing to the members of the Embassy and other gentlemen assembled on the platform, Princess Henry and Princess Ena then entered their carriage, and drove away to Kensington Palace, attended by Lord William Cecil and Misa Cochrane.
Princesa Enn looked a trifle pale, but very bright and cheerful. She wore a brown travelling cloak, sable furs, and a April, 1908, large black hat, while Princess Henry was. dressed in deep mourning. It had been rumoured that some members of the ultra- Protestant party intended to seize the ocasion for a demonstration, but nothing of the sort occurred.

THE ROYAL HONGKONG OLUB. The final race of the season for yachts of the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club took place yesterday for a cup presented by Mr John Hastings The course was from the Police. Pier, Kowloon, to a markboat off Cape Collison, and the starters were:-Vernon," Dione," Colleen," "Min," "Kathleen," * Doreon," "Payne," and "Bonito, "Gloria." The day was one peculiar to Hongkong when a southerly breeze is
Sometimes the wind blowing. with good force, at others it had died it shifted a calm, while
Was the round considerably. "Dione" first boat across the line, but running into a calm patch was soon picked up by the others of the fleet. The majority of the bosts kept towards the southerly shore, but Mr Pollock in the "Colleen," elected to stand to the opposite side of the harbour and his manoeuvre proved of advantage to him for he ran into a good breeze which carried him well away from the others. He passed through the passa long way in front and rounded the markboat about one mile ahead of the next boat.
