LODGE

THE

SUBMARINE AÐ IN PERIL.

Struck by a" Steamer.

An alarming adventure befell a British - submarine on Feb. 14. While in Plymouth Harbour, returning from exorcises, A9 came into collision with a steamer.... Her

conning tower was perforated and her periscope sights smashed, but by a merciful stroke of fortune the frail craft preserved her buoyancy, and rone of the crew werd injured.

The accident happened, like most of its predecessoir, during instructional exorcises. After a lecture on submarine work at the War Course College, a party of nayal officere was taken into the Sound, aboard, the cruiser Theseus, for a practical demonstration. Admiral Sir Lowis Beau- mont" and his staff were, with them, and Captain Lees, in pecting captain of sub- mailads, and Flag Captain! H4, of the Forth, were aboard Torpedo best No. 80. A flotilla of five aubmarines were out, and it was fatendel that they should engage in a mimic attack on the oruiser, but the sea was too rough for work at close quarters, owing to a "Heavy ground swell, and the flotills was sent into the op en sea' for: diving practice.

While coming to the surface 49—sister ship of the unfortunate AB, which foundered in the Sound last Juno-got into the track of the collier Coath, steaming into port round Penlee Point, from Penzance. The Coath struck the forepart of the submarine's conning tower, cutting a small hole into it, and smashing the sight of the periscope, There were two officers and eleven men in the submarine, and their thoughts, as they felt the shock of the collision, may be imagined, for it was a blow of this kind which sent the A1 to the bottom off the-- Nab Light.

A member of the crew of the aubmarine states the vessel was proceeding at about 25ft. under water when her conning, tower was struck by the keel of the Coath. The submarine was knocked half over by the impact, and, although perfect coolnesa pre- BADEN-POWELL. vailed on board, it was feared that the bost was doomed. The lives of those on board: were saved by a piece of excellent seaman. PRICE $4,50

ship. Lieutenant Fraser, who was in com mand, at once closed the water-light door" P.D. DOZEN,

of the conning tower and so prevented an inrush of water. The ballast tanks were blown out, and the submarine s'owly rose to the surface. One man was injured but the rest esc ped with no worsos effects than

The Theseus approached, the other sub- marines of the flotilla gathered round, and the Upath stood by to offer what help she could give. To the deep relief of everybody, it was found that A9 had not lost her. buoyancy. After a careful inspection of her damage, it was decided that she was fit to proceed at easy speed to her berth in the Hamooze, alongside the cruiser Fortb, the parent ship of the dotills. There it was found that her hull was damaged above the water-line, and that the forepart of the conning tower casing was buckled. The vessel will be docked for repairs. The went into port. -“ALL FOR 'MOTHER"

Shortest Will on Record.

A will written on an envelope. was pro- duced recently in the Probate Court, Lon- don. The President characterised it as probably the shortest will on record that had ever been admitted to probate.

Mrs Emily Thorn, the widow, who pro- pounded the testanientary paper, said that her late husband'was Mr Frederick Charles Thorn, and he formerly lived at Streatham. On May. 15, 1905, he was taken suddenly ill. The following morning she and her children

were standing by the bedside,

when he pointed to a mirror and made them understand that he wanted a piece of paper. Find Mo

They got him an envelope, and he wrote on the back, "All for mother.-C. T."

'He was usually known as Charlie Thorn. He was too weak to do more than write his initials. He motioned to two of his and inurtured "Write," and ac- sons, cordingly they appended their signatures as witnesses. He whispered to his wife "All for you, all for you."

The President held that the envelope will was duly executed.

CANADIAN PACIFIC NEW ISSUE,

FOR THE CONNOISSEUR.

MONTREAL, Feb. 8

This afternoon Sir Thomas Shaughnessy made a statement to the Press to the effect that it is, proposed to hold a spécial meeting of the shareholders of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company in Montreal on March 19 for the purpose of considering and acting upon the recommendation of the directors that the ordinary share capital of the Company be increased from the present authorised amount of 110,000,000 dols., of

which the apibunt of 101,400,000 dols, has

already been issued, to 150,000,000 dols.

In view of the great increase in the com pany's business, and its continued expan- sion, it is desirable that immediate pro- vision be made for still further increasing the facilities of the company on every section of its system. The directors have, therefore, decided to inake an issue imme- diately after the nesting of 29,280,000, dols. of ordinary capital stock, boing 8,600,000 dols. already authorised by the shareholders and 11,680,000 dols. of the proposed increase, thus making the total Amount outstanding 121,680,000 dols., and, As in the case of previous issues of new stock, to give the shareholders of the ordinary capital stock the privilege of subscribing for the same at par in the pro- portion of one share of new stock to five shares of their registered holdings on the closing of the transfer-books for this purpose on Friday, April 20.
