Another striking spectacle followed. Ats a large school & square was illuminated with thousands of Chinese lanterns, and hund reds of children lined the pavement, way ing little flags and shouting "Long live the English." Inside there was more singing, more kissing, and more speech-making.
After a stay at a music hall, the council. lors wound the festivities with a mid

SMART JOURNALISM.
The Paris evening papers which gave the results of the voting at Versailles were on sale in the street ten minutes after the result was known. This was rather smart
journalinin for the meridian of the Rue du Croissant. It was done in this way: A first edition of several thousand copies had been printed. Half this issue proclaimed Fallières; the other half, Doumer. When the telephone settled the question, the Fallières half was hurried out to the street vendors. The figures appeared in a second adition. The portrait of the President-elect was arranged for in the same way. Two portraits had been prepared, with same inscription: "L' Elu de la Nation," and, again, the telephone that gave the electoral décision decided the selection.
£7,000,000 A YEAR ON GOLF.
To be without a decoration was once a distinction in France; in England to-day It is a distinction not to belong to a golf club.
The royal and ancient game is growing in popularity, and millions sterling have
been spent on it.
On an average the number of now clubs opened during the months of Jane, July, and August last year was seven a week, while the average for the past 12 months has been four a week. As on an average each club claims at least 100 acres, 20,000 acres have been taken up since November last for the purpose of making links.
It has just been decided to lay out £6000 in obtaining. land for a new golf course at North Borwick. During the past year, too, £20,000 has been spent by the Tooting Bec Club and £12,000 by the Bournemouth Corporation, while sume ranging from £2000 to £5000 have been expended in scores of cases.
It is estimated that the golf players of the United Kingdom now number 350,000,
