AUSTRALIA FELIX.

The decided preferencs for town life shown by Australians is one of the earliest facts to arrest the attention of a vialtor. Those who went out to open the country, writes a Sydney correspondent to the Globe, risked their lives at first in food, and drought, or at the hands of aborigines; but that stage-passed away, the social con ditions solidified themselves, and people settled down to enjoy the fruits of their prosperity. Taste began to assert itself; the university, schools of arts, and public libraries came into being; the desires and aspirations of leisure began to make them- selyés felt; and the increasing wants of the population aided in creating employment.

The average of personal expenditure on food and drink alone is higher than in any other country in the world:" "More meat is consumed and twice as much tos, except, perhaps, in Russia. The Australiane spend more money per head on tobacco than any other country, with the exceptiod of the United States, Holland, Turkey, Brazil, and, perhaps, Germany. In 1903 the total cost of living, for, the population of the Commonwealth was estimated at

Thus temporarily bereft of part of her TO AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS. BY ORDER OF THE MORTGAGEES, adornment, she steps on to the measuring stand provided for this special purpose, and always kept on the promises. Now comes the crux of the ceremony. The

judge carefully wields the sliding indicator,

and, in the gentlest possible manner, checkmates any suspicion of unduly mani pulating the head and feat."

Measuring completed, the pastor entors the particulara in the brides register. The entries close with the end of each year, and it is an interesting group that wends its way to the mance on the first week-day of the year to receive the dowries.

These marriages always take place on a Friday, on which occasion there is invari ably a good turn-out of spectators, the union of a deaf-and-dumb couple having attracted a record attendance. The brides' register reveals some curious features. In one family three sisters and a brother's wife were successful in annexing the gift, and of two prize-taking sisters ode was the tallest and the other the shortest. In another instance only half a day separated one of the lucky brides from the next in

torn.

The present minister of the parish has officiated at these contests for the past twenty-one years, during which period the value of the dowries has averaged a trifle Over £6 each.::

The origin of this droll competition is decidedly interesting. One boisterous winter day a wealthy local laird observed a young couple wending their way to church to be "made one." Curious to know their cir cumstances, he made enquiries, and learnt that the mutual love of the ploughman and the ex-servant lass was their principal asset for setting up house. As a sequel the laird left at his death a legacy of £1,000, the interest of which he degreed was to be divided, annually for all time coming into five equal portions, four amongst brides, as already mentioned, and the fifth to provide batmoal, tea, sugar, etc., for the poor of the parish.

This quaint custom, besides creating. pleasurable excitement, does much material good to the humble participants. The fund, which is invested in Government Consols, at present stands at £1,133, and the last distribution-on Monday, the 1st January 1906-was the fifty-ninth.

Miss Palmer saye In my case con stipation lead to a stoppage of the bowels, I could not take nourishment, and con- sequently grew too feeble to work. Having taken to my bed, I grow weaker and weaker. It was not thought I should live. Indeed, the clergyman of the parish came to pray at my bealde, so near death was I. The doctor called in a physician, and it was Bald my only hope of life lay in an operation which might or might not be successful. I was taken to the Queen's Hospital, and prepared for operation, but at the last moment my parents stopped all the pro- ceedings and bad me taken back home. This was in consequence of what they had

CHARGE AGAINST A CONSTABLE.

Police Disclosures.

The hearing was continued, at the Magistracy, this afternoon, before Mr F. A. Hazeland, of the charge of assault brought against Police Constable Taylor by J. Cree, foreman at Quarry Bay,

So far, owing to the uncertainty of arrival and of the length of stay that the vessels will make in port, nothing definite has been decided regarding the arrangements that are being made to return the splendid hospitality that was accorded the officers and men of our vessels when they were in Fronch waters. The Fleet will probably make a stay here

of about a week's duration.

As the Japanese floet is also expected in the harbour within a day or two the Admi- ralty arranged a programme of entertain. mont to both the French and Japanese Fleets. Yesterday a meeting was held on board the "King Alfred" when the following programme was drawn up to be sattled either to-day or to-morrow:-
