Mr T. P. O'Connor, M. P., in a recont issue of M. A. P. writes amusingly in regard to the ordeal through which the now M. P. has to passi The greatest ‘of all - difficulties, he says," with regard to the legislator is when he makes a speech. It is, seldom that a legislator is wily enough to remember that, when he is going to sit down, the very first thing he has to do is to remove the silk hat which he has loft on his seats. In every now House of Commons there are a certain number of young mem bers who sit on their hats after they have delivered their maiden speech. It is one of those old and familiar jokea that never cease to interest and amuse the House of Commons: If it were done, for the thous andth time it would have the same success; it is always feceived with loud guffaws. I have seen a member almost destroy his Parliamentary career by his manner of deal- ing with a hat; though in this particular caso it was that of another member and not his own which produced the catastrophe. He was speaking with great excitement-he was a man of somewhat excitable tempera

But when the member did it for the second time, poople began to shake their heads; they thought this man would not do, and, as matter of fact, he never did attain in the House of Commons that position which his great, and varied gifte entitled him. “ There are several other small points of order which the now member is almost certain to disregard. If you examine the carpeting of the House of Commons, you will observe that whoreas. the greater part of the floor is covered with cocosunt fibre, there are rugs for the feet on either side of the floor. If member speaks with both his feet outside this rug he is immediately 1976 called to order by loud shouts from all parts of the House. The affrighted men- ber hasn't the least idea what is meant by

SHARE REPORT.

In their weekly share report dated 10th. March, Messrs Vernon and Smyth state---

The market continues dull and wo have only a few investing transactions to report; rates however, have shown some signa of steadying, and investing buyers are in many cases unable to purchase except at an advance on the quoted rates, Specula. tive business continues practically non est and shows no signs of recovery..

Banks.-Hongkong and Shanghais have declined to 8855 at which, rate several small sales have taken place; the London rate has also fallen to £89. At time of writing, however, a better feeling is appa- rent, and it is doubtful whether many more shares would be forthcoming except at an advance in the rate. Nationals have been placed at 84, and more shares are wanted at that rate.

Marine Insurances.Unions have further improved to $800 with sales, and close steady at the rate. China Traders have been placed at 896 and 897 closing with buyers at the former and sellors at the latter rato. Cantons have found buyers at the improved rate of $350 and close steady at that. The Northern Insurances are quoted from the

Shanghai advices, being without any local

business to report.

Fire Insurances-Hongkongs have ruled steady with an inclination to improvement and small sales have been made at 8300. Chinas continue in demand and difficult to procure at 883 to 884, and we have heard of no sales. Market closes with no shares on offer with a small unsatisfied demand at $84.

Shipping.-Hongkong,

Ganton and

Macaos have improved Lo8241, with asles, in ademandat$24) meeting with no response At the time of closing, although a few more shares are obtainable at 824), the market closes decidedly firmer and higher rates may be looked for in the near future. Indo China's continue neglected and weak; shares have been on offer during the week at $95, but no sales have been reported of any consequence. China-Manilas areon the mar ket at 818) ax div., and New Star Ferries are offering at 823: wo bave nothing fur- ther to report under this heading.

Refineries.-China Sagara romain out of favour and without business; sellers ruling the market we have no sales to report. Luzons continuos quiet and practically out of the market.

Mining. We have only sinail sales of Raubs to report at quotation.

Docks, Wharva and Godowns.-Hong. kong and Whampoa Docks continue to rule dull, but shares are not easily obtainable at present prices, and holders seem to have decided to hang on. Kowloon Wharves have been placed during the week at $103. $102, and later at $101 er div. of 83 pald on the 18th inst. Farnhams, after touching Tis, 115 in Shanghai, have again limproved and close firmish at Tla. 120. New Amoy Docks close without business, but are firmer at $16) buyers

Lands, Hotels and Buildings.Hongkong Lands have been in some small demand, and offers to buy at 8112, 8113 failing to bring out shares, the rate rose to 8114 at which a few shares changed hands. At time of writing buyers do not appear to be inclined to pay the closing price, but at a point under a few more shares might be placed. Hotels have ruled very weak and sales are reported at 8131, market closing weak at 8132 sellers, West Points continue neglect- ed at 853, but buyers at two points lower fail to obtain shares. Humphreys have been placed at $11, and close steady at that. Shanghai Lands, and Kowloon Lands are

without any business.

Cotton Mills.-Ewos have improved in

ROYAL HONGKONG YACHT CLUB. The Royal Hongkong Yacht Club had two races this week ond, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. Saturday's race was for the Committee's Cup and the following boata started :-"Dione," "Ver-

non,

Alannah," "Kathleen," Erica," "Colleen," "Chanticlser," "* Min," *** Glo- rla," "Doreen." The course was from the Police Pier to Channel Rocks, North Fair-

way buoy and back to the start. The wind

crossed

Was Basterly when "Vernon the line ahead of the rest. She kept to the northern shore for a few tacks, whilo most of the others, with the exception of Colleen" and "Min," took the southern shore, thereby getting into a better wind, "Dione" thon lead from "Vernon," "Erica". being third ** Alan- nah" fourth and "Kathleen" fifth. "Dione" was first round the Channel Rocks followed by Erica" and "Vernon," then came "Alannah

and "Kathleen." On

the run down towards the North Fairway Buoy the position remained the same, but at the Hunghom point "Vernon" passed *Erica" and went into second position, being then about 3 minutes astern of "Dione." Shortly afterwards II. M. S. "Bramble" was sighted coming across the harbour from the south, apparently at full speed, and heading straight for "Vernon," The skippor of the yacht hailed the 1- Bramble" but no notice was taken luff And Vernon "

forced to W自日 up into Yaumati Bay to get clear of the on- coming man-of-war. This effectively spoilt any chance the yacht may have had of displacing "Dione" and enabled the second and third boats to make up considerably "Diona" rounded the "Vernon.'

The following were the DOUGLAS STEAMSHIP, COMPANY,

CHAMPIONSHIP OLABS.

The only starters were "Dione" and "Vernon" "Elspeth "having been raffed and won by a non-member of the Club and

consequently was ineligible to participate in the race. This is rather unfortunate in as-much as it greatly affects "Dione" chance of winning the Championship. As matters now stand "Dione" has a total of 60 marks and "Vornon" hus 68. If "Dione" wins the next race, which is the last, "Vernon" will fill second place, as apparently only the two boats can start, And." Vernon "will thus win the Cham. plonship of the year by two points. Should Elapeth" become eligible before the final race, "Vernon" may be beaten by

both boats, in which case, should "Dione's" win the race, she will also win the. Obam- plonship.
