SOUTH AFRICAN LABOUR.
· Liberala Confounded.
Mr Griffith Borcawan, the Unionist can- date in the Tunbridge division, scored roitly at a tempestuous mosting which the Radicals attempted to break up. He was talking about Chinese labour. He read one or two clauses in the Ordinance, and at the end of each was asked: "Is that slavery ?"" **Yes," was yelled in chorus, "I have been reading from the British Guiana Ordinance, sanctioned by a Radical Gavern- ment," replied the speaker, much to the delight of his supporters"
On the subject of Chinese labour, of which the Radicals have been trying to make the most in the St. George's division of the Tower Hamlets, Mr Wells, the Con- Kovative candidate, is retaliating with the fact that the people who actually originated Chineso labour were the Radical party themselves, for it was they who in 1860 entered into a convention with the Emperor of China for shipping Chinose subjects to the British Colonies. Since that convention, the Radicals, Mr Wells is right in pointing out, have sanctioned 22 Ordinances for Asiatic labour in the Colonies, including that for coolie labour in British Guinea, which, if the Transvaal Convention was to be eslled slavery, he did not hesitate to describe as penal
cervitude.

Falling Of.
The important district of Ka Ting appears to be suffering from a severe de pression in trade. According to a recent summary recently published in the Canton Times, foreign imports, mostly cloths of various kinds, am unted to considerably more than million dollars. In 1904 it had declined to just a round million, whi'st last year only $700,000 worth of trade was transacted.
The imports of Szchuen opium during 1903 amounted to 800 piculs. But in 194 this branch of import amounted to only 500 piculs. Last year however the total was only between two and three hundred picula. The
