SHARE REPORT.
In their weekly sharo report dated 9th February, Messrs Vernon and Smythr
state :-
While rates remain steady to strong business continues slack, and we have nothing of any importance to report. The little business that has been transacted during the week has been confined to a few stocks only, and anything like a general demand is conspicuous only by its absence. Banks.-Hongkong and Shanghais have': obanged hands in small lot at 8805 for cash, and a few shares remain on offer að time of closing. Nationals unchanged and without business,
· Marine Insurancés.--Unions have been placed at 8735 and close with seller at $737. Cantons continued steady at $325 during the early part of the week, and close with buyers at $340. China Traders have ruled steady with small sales at 891, closing with sellors at that rate and buyers. at 800. Yangtazo and North Chins quota- tions are taken from Shanghai.
Fire Insurances,-Hongkong continue
neglected at 8325. Chinas have been placed at $88 and close steady at that rate.
t
Shipping. Indo-Chinas, with a demand from London, improved in the early part of the week to $98, and to Tls, 71 in Shang hai. Later, however, the London demand having apparently been satisfied, rates have again fallen and the market closes quiet at 897, and at The. 09 in Shanghai. Hong- kong, Canton and Macaos have changed hands and are still enquired for at $254. while a few shares are obtainable at $26. Chini Manilas have been in demand at 820 to 121, but very few shares are obtainable. Douglases could still be placed at 840 but none are on offer. Other stocks under this heading require no special mention.
ך דין
Refineries-China Sugars have changed hands during the week at $210 and 8212 1376 cash, and at some what erratic rates forward; the market closes steady with no sellers under $215. Luzons have improved to $30 without sales.

KIDNEYS INJURED BY AN ACCIDENT.
W. J. Moore, 11, Pakefield-street,
MR Pakefield, Lowestoft, England, is well known and respected, Although only 25 years of age, he has been connected with religious work for many years and on most Sundays during the past 5 years he has ably occupied some village pulpit.
Some months back, Mr Moore wrote us a grateful letter, telling of the good Doan's Backache Kidney Pills had done him, and inviting us to send our representative to get full particulars. This we have now done, and our readers will see that the case teems with interest :-
It was when the electric tramway was being laid in Lowestoft,' Mr Moore began, *and I was at the wharf getting a load of cement, when suddenly and without warn- inz, several tons of coment slipped, and before I know what had happened, a bag struck me a glancing blow on the buck. It was the worst pain I've ever known, just as though my back was broken in two. They took me to the hospital, where for 27. weeks I lay hovering between life and death. The doctor said my kidneys were bruised, and at length he gave up my case as hopeless, and I was taken home.
Into me.
"Not one of my friends thought I cou'd Hve. The pains I suffered in my back and you took out your hips were just as though pocket-knife and kept sticking the blade I used to get dizzy and exhausted with the pains, and I suffered agonies from rheumatism, as well as gravel and urinary trouble. I plastered my back until it was green but no relief could I get, and at last I became so weak with the constant suffer-
ing that I couldn't keep down a morsel of
food. A watery swelling came about my
eyes, and for a fortnight I couldn't see.

Doan's Pills have made me my old self again, and I'm as well to-day as ever I was; there's no pain or urinary trouble at all. New York, November 26, 1905, ME PAUL MORTON, President,
The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, 12, Boardway, New York.
DEAR SIR:-The exhaustive examination which we have made of the affairs of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States is so far completed, that we are now able to furnish you with a Balance Sheet showing the true Financial Position of the Society on September 30th, 1905.
The Assets of the Society as claimed were all found to be on hand, and amounted in value to $416,166,5 '0.10 as shown by the Balance Sheet.
The Surplus over and above all Liabili ties amounted to G $67,142,865.42.
A conservative revaluation of the Assets, including a re-appraisal of all the real estate owned by the Society or covered by mort- gages held by the Society, has resulted in a reduction in certain of the values adopted in the Society's last Annual Re 1ort, principally in Real Estate and in Stocks of certain financial institutions..
Yours very truly, (Signed) PRICE, WATERHOUSE & Co.,
Chartered Accountants. by A. LOWES DICKISON, F.C.A., C.P.A. (Signed) HASKING & SELIS,

by ELIJAH W. SELLS, C.P.A. You will be gratified to learn: (1) That all the assets alaimed by the Society are on hand, are of a grade, and are conservatively worth & 8416,166,500, 10.
Over 98 per cent of our death claims aro settled within 24 hours after proof of death is received. and since January 1st, 1905, through all of the agitation concerning life insurance, this Society alone has paid out in death claims and benefits of other kinds over G $116,789 every working day.
Assuring you that it will be my constant endeavour to conduct the offers of this Society in a manner that will merit your hearty approbation, I am,
Very truly yours,
PAUL MORTON, President.

Hongkong's streets on Saturday night presented an appearance such as, it is pro- bable, they never did before. Since previous illuminations many fino piles of buildings have come into existence, and it was these that were, in the majority of cases, seen to the greatest advantage, owing to their situation and distinctive architectural features.
The sight was a glimpse of fairyland, the city's streets being converted into brilliant avenues glittering with a hundred thousand different-coloured lanterns and lights; such a sight, in fact,
As a resident of the West might conjure up on reading tales of the glint and gold of the mysterious Orient. For purposes of illumination, notwithstanding the narrow streets, Hongkong, it may be claimed, is wonderfully well adapted.
