THE EASTERN-TRADE.
(Continued from Puge 5.)
As to the opposition of the: Consolidated Company, the shareholders in the Russian Liquid Fuel and the Baku Companies (both of whom have marketed kerosene through the Consolidated) should insist upon Anding from their directors what war against us bas cost them. We have scarcely had a bed of roser in the Eastern trade, and although, for the period under review, average prices in the Last were good, during the latter months of the year the Standard Oil Company waged war furiously against us, and prices rapidly declined until, thanke to their action in India, which foreed the Burms Oil Company also to lower their prices, the Indian trade has been conducted at a very heavy loss. Incredible as it may the Indian Government accused us— quffering, as I have already shown, by the attacks
upon us. wantonly made by the Standard Oil Company-of actually being league with them! And our efforts to obtain redsa, either by the abolition of the duty in India, or through being granted. facilities for exploration in Burma equivalent to those given to our competitors, the Burina 01 Company, were treated with in- differeney and all our representations w.ro rejected. Ear was lent to our miny opponents, who, for their own purposes, represent us as boing a foreign ompany! Now, gentlemen, no inore grave issuo has over confronted Brig tish merchants than the one proclaimed by more than one of the ex-Ministers of the Crown, that firms investing capital outside the British E pire-oven in an

amount of oil that we can handle, but the qualities of the products differ materially from those which have hitherto been placed on the market, and we are at a considerable- disadvantage through this. made for this description of oil, which is of very light specific gravity. Our kerosene is extremely rich in earbon, and it requires a different type of lamp to burn it properly, Because if the carbon is not consumed it results in smoke, whereas if the combustion is perfect it gives not only a better light, but is of much greater duration than the oils
· of lighter specific gravity. · It takes time to overcome these obstacles, but we have succeeded, I am happy to say, in devising means, at very little cost, to utilise existing lamps for the perfect burning of our oil, Although during the current year we have not derived the benefit from this that wo should, owing to the fact that we have only just solved the difficulty, I am quite con. vinced that in time a great outlet will be secured for all the kerosene we produce.

THE YEAR'S RESULTS. You will expect from me some informa- tion to the results, of the trading for 1905. From the data at our disposal it is extremely difficult to make up any reliable figures, but as the war of prices in Europe continued until October of this year, whilst the scarcity of Russian oil did not begin to make itself felt in the Far East until an even later period, the average prices realised have been the worst on and had it record for many years,
not
been for our own largely in- oreased production of kerosene, the cost of which I am happy to say is very low, we should have had a disastrous year's trading. With these factors, however, to get off against the results of the competition we have had to meet, we feel justified in distributing a dividend at the same rate as for the year 1904, and this, namely, 18. per share, will be duly paid on Jan. 1. The prospects for 1906 are very much better in overy respect, and I believe that by the time we meet the shareholders again we shall be able to tell them that the resulta of the sacrifices we have made in the past will be in full progress, because we have arrived at what I firmly beliove will prove a most satisfactory arrangement with the Burma Oil Company. E cannot con- clude my remarks without expressing the deep regret of my colleagues and myself at the very savere loss that we have sustained
by the deaths of Messrs. Henderson and Runge, both of whom had been connected with the company from its inception, and had shown the utmost interest and devotion to its business, I bog now formally to move
the adoption of the report.
Mr R. Jardine seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously.
Mesara 8. Samuel, W. G. Mitchell and R. J. Black were re elected directors and
Mr H. E. Arnhold was appointed to the Board in place of his uncle, Mr Philip Arnhold.

Let me thank you for your comparatively temperate article of Wednesday, though I fancy that on re-reading next morning you would probably have struck out a few adjectives and some epithels which are none the less Insult ing because they are persistently applied. To dub a man a "traitor" and a "rebel" does not really clear up anything, especially when the very question at issue is thereby begged. Both sides have now stated their case, howover, and I am not proposing to prolong the controversy. I write now simply to draw your attention to two points which I feel assured you will con- sider, and perhaps in the distant future even modify some harsh expressions. There were leading, respectable, patriotic and responsible opponents of the late African war such as the one I named. They stated their objections long before the war commenced. They continued to protest as long as the damage to British prestige and interest (as they were con. vinced) continued. Considering it is wrong

We hear that with the return from leave of Dr J. M. Atkinson (President of the Sanitary Board) early in March next several changes in official circles are probable. Amongst these is the appointment of Dr Francis Olaik, present bead of the Board, to the position of Superintendent of the Government Civil Hospital during the time that Dr Bell is Home on leave, for which ho is now due. Several other officials are expected to return to the Colony at about the same time as Dr Atkinson.

STANDARD OIL COMPANY'S POLICY.
The general policy of the Standard Oil Company bas led the Government of the United States to institute a commisalon to investigate the conduct of its business. The Standard pose as the champions of American oil, and they allege that the whole object of their being is to benefit that industry. I find it very difficult to reconcile this statement with their actions, for it is within our own knowledge that they bought Russian oil very largely for shipment to India, and as they chartered at least one of our ships, we know exactly what the oil cost them. Their action, apparently, was prompted solely by the desire to inflict the heaviest 'oss they could upon the Burma Oil Company and ourselves, and a compari- son of the prices realised by them, under their distribution average over Europe (except Italy, to which I shall refer shortly) will show that they are selling their oil abroad at prices giving them a lower return
