ROZHDESTVENSKY IN- TERVIEWED.
His Account of the Great Battle
Admiral Rozhdestvensky has, in an in- terview granted to M. Ludorio Naudeau'.
of the Journal, (Paris) thrown some new light on the great battle in the Trushima Straits.
Admiral Rozhdestvensky incidentally confirms-fully the conclusions of British naval experte. He says that it was his original intention to take his feet direct to the Far East, and that the delay of Mada gasoir was caused by unavoidable circum. Istances." What afl these circumstances were he declined to say, but admittel that difficulties with the German colliers were one. He believes that if there had been no delay he would have found the Japanese fleet less well prepared to receive him. As it was, he hoped to be able to fight an in- decisive battle, and to get his ships through to Vladivostock th
in at least as good a condition as he left those of the enemy.. Henever intended to avoid a fight, and noth-- ing led him to expect complete disaster.
His fleet was divided on May 26 into four divisions, advancing in four lines ahead, M. Naudeau does not use the word 'ahead,' but the Admiral's description of the "Orel" as being the rear ship of her column pos tu ates this formation. Three leading divisions were each composed of four battle- ships. In the first were the "Suvaroff," the “Alexander III " be
and the “Orol,” in the second, the **Osla baya," the “Sisɛoy Veliky."the"Nakimof," and the “Navariu "in the third, the *** Nikōlai... I.," - the Sonisvin, the “Apraxin," and the Ochakof." The fourth division followed, made up of the

came a mob of shipa-five small cruisers, nine destroyers, and sir transports.
This force was attacked by twelve Japan- ose warships, all described by Admiral Rozhdestvensky as battleships. For the first half hour the Russian gunners, who were better trained than was generally supposed, shot well. All the damage to the Japanese fest was done in that half-hour. Afier- wards the Russians became demoralised, and the Japanese veterans, who never lost their nerve for an instant, continued their work of Yeatsuotion almost in safety. In two hours the victory was complete. It was due entirely, the Admiral says, to gun fire, And yet the effect to that gun fire was not- what had 1

Not single percussion ahell pierced the sides of the Russian ships, but the shock wao
sused by their idoessant burtting started the rivete of the armour plating. Eventually the rivets shook out, the water the holes, the vessels lost their centre of er entered through gravity, healed over, and sank.

The only structural defect he had to complain of was the position of the port holes for the 81p, guns, which, being too near the water line; were awaab in the heavy ses. The heat in the barbettes and casemates was insupportable, and the des pumps were amongst the first things, troyed. The Japanese vessels, in the Admiral's belief, were burned nearly as badly, but they were able, as a last resort, to put into a friendly port, and to ex- tinguish the flames.

One phase of the work that is being amongst the poor of the Colony carried on by the Society St. Vincent De Paul was described in last Saturday's issue of the CHINA MAIL, and the object of the present article is to bring under the notice of the public that aspect of life in the slums that was then untouched upon.
On Sunday cur representative. went alumming. urder the guidance of the Society's secretary and some of his fe low workers, and saw how they endeavour to alleviate the lot of many poor sufferors and do their best to brighten the lives of those who have few else to care for them and are not able to succeed in the struggle for existence unaided.
Poverty most abject was what was dis. covered, and a condition of misery that alls loud for public sympathy and publio. charity, if it has not an oven stronger claim for action on the part of the Government." There are slums in Hongkong that area disgrace to the city, and more especially so,
as, in most casca, the houses that constitute them are the property of wealthy, and in some cases, prominent men. They are handsome rent paying investments and contribute annually large sums to the coffers of their owners. ---A-considerable—¡orticu of the properties visited on Sunday are owned by a European generally reputed to be a millionaire, and no one would say from looking at the houses and after having heard the exorbitant rents that they realise, that there was any reason why he should not be so. To indicate the properties mentioned is for obvious reasons impossible. To fitly describe with pen and ink the general condition of these houses and the reeking squalor by which life in them is surrounded is almost out of the question.
