NATUNA HARDWOOD
OF ALL SIZES AND LENGTHS,
Idaera Lamke and Rogge report under GOOD FOR SHIP AND WHARF BUILDING AND RAILWAY LAYERS date of December 2—
Chartering business during the fortnight under review hus, for several reasons been on a smaller compass than for some time past.
At Saigon, stocks of old crop's grain would now appear to be almost exhausted. It was hoped here, that, though on a very small scale perhaps, shipmente might be contina. fod and if not until end of January, or February when the new crops' produco, will be available yet, somehow, for the current month; but from reports to hand the prospects are that nothing more can be done this year There was a solitary enquiry after a boat for

prompt, toʻload for Java, but the business" INSPECTION could not be brought off despite tonnage being willing to take a low rate, and from some enquiries-after-stoamers to load in February/March/April, there has likewise beon-no result, partly, owing to forward price being too high yet, and partly because of high exchange, thus we have had a fort- night without any Saigon chartering at all, The Newchwang season has closed by w. Only further local fixture that has been heard of, was of a boat for Amoy, part cargo, st 26 cents.
now.
Concerning Java freights, an adverso Tocal market for augar has stopped busines on natives account. On local 'refinery's behalf the fixtures of 2 steamers were put through, on basis of 223 cents per picul.
Coal freights have ruled quiet, with busi-
ness from Moji to this port at 81.40 and for Sinzapore at $1,60, and from Mororan for Hongkong at $1.80 per ton, and practically
no further demand.
From Hongay, a boat has been done for Hongkong at $1.35 and for a subsequent trip for Swatow at $1.50
From the North, some orders reached here for Moji/Shanghai at $1.70 or slightly better, for Moji/Hankow at $325, for Karatzo/Chinking at $2.00 per ton, etc., eto, but, with the North East monebou to -boat up against with a ballast ship these proposals offer no inducement for such
wcers as have steamors available here.
To load at Chinking for Canton, from nøveral enquiries after outsiders, the fixture locally of a boat of about 36,000 piculs at $8,000 has been the outcome.

public disgrans that innocent men should be imprisoned for three, four, and five months without trial.' A for years ago a man with a bad record pleaded guilty to a charge of which he was innocent, and; stating that he wanted to 'get it over,' was sent to prison for three months. Now, he was actually present, as a spectator, at the Assizes to which he would have been aont had he chosen to go before a jury. During the interval which had elapsed he had served his sentence, In the English back woods the unpaid magistracy is still more unfit
t to administer justice. A poor old woman was once arraigned before a certain Bench for that she did allow her donkey to BFPZBon certain land. Her advocate contended that, the Bench could not convict, and was proceeding to quote, in support of his case, decision of Lord Chief Justice Cockburn, when the chairman pull. ed him up with: Mr we care nothing about Lord Chief Justice Cockburn here. And to show that they didn't they inflicted a fine on the old lady! This is rural justice, and this is the sort of thing that causes people to be unjustifiably committed to the Assizes without bail being allowed.

The intervals between the Assizes 2221 are not nearly short enough, especially in parts of the country where a good deal of criminal business has to be transacted.
