These are plain truths; lmown to everybody. HONGKONG HIGH-LEVEL TRAM-

What is not nearly so well-known is that one

may eat an abundance of good food and yet starve, deriving from it, instead of nourishment, only vintblankle pulas: Where that if the cens, the sufferer is a victim of indigestion.

There are thousands of such sufferers in orery part of the world. Among them, until recently, Was Mrs. Anua Olwage, of 104, Bultfontein Road, Kimberley, C. C. For more than five years 1 buff red from a ditordered stomach," she says in a letter dated December 5th, 1904

I was nearly always constipated, which induced me to resort to purgatives; but their only effect was to make me worse. Headache and Sleepless PERS, BO commonly attending constipation, troubled me greatly. None of the many medicines I tried seemed to touch my complaint, until I came to Mother Boigal'e Byrap. My husband's Attention was called to that remedy: by a very remarkable cura ft effected in Johan nesburg. It proved a lucky thing for mej: for to-day I am as well and strong as any woman twenty years younger, a fact due entirely to Mother Seigel's Syrup.

Hardly less, strong the testimony of Mr. Annie Palm, of 20, Burtal's Place, Beaconsfield, C. C., who writes thar on December 6th, 1904:

Brilliant Success.

Whether or not there is truth in the state. ment that many cqttish men until they go abroad know little or nothing of the kilta and have never heard of St Andrew or of haggis there can be no doubt that no Soot his for many years past lived a twelve month in Hongkong without being remind ed of the quots of homage due to the me mory of the patron saint. The first is the question of the development of independence-we education, a problem of very great im find that the multiplication of Mission portance and of very great difficulty at stations in places where the Church i the present time. I am not one of already planted and our modern ideas those who despies the old Chinese of episcopacy combine to binder its system of education. It differs from establishment. THE INDEPENDENCE OF NATIVE CHURCHES.

The second great. problem which in the present day calls for our most care- ful consideration is-the question as to when and how independence is to be given to the native Churches in China; There are districts in China in which Protestant Missions, have been carried on for niore than half a century, and in which very real and very solid progress has been made. When it is possible in a section of one province to confirm on an average 1,000 converts annually, and to admit, as I have been privileged to do, ten Chinese to Holy Orders in a

single year, one cannot but foel that the time ought to be very near when we might expect to see the native Church in that part of China established on its own independent footing, and carry- ing on its own pastoral and evangelistic work, thus taking its proper place as the great instrument for the spread of the Gospel throughout the land, whilst the European missionaries move on to plant the Church in unevangelised parte, But, as a matter of fact, it seems to me that in this respect our

We aim at a twentieth-century, not a first century, standard. The result is that a modern Mission is a complex mass of machinery, maintained and con- trolled by Europeans, who are bound to remain in order to keep ups number of institutions, which, from financial and other reasons, it is impossible for the infant native Church adequately to sup- port. But the almost inevitable result of this is that the native clergy and lay- workers are overshadowed and kept in a position of dependence.

Not long ago I was severely taken to task for saying that, in my opinion, we had too many too many doctors, too many

He said:"I suffered a good deal from colds, through having the shop windows and door open. My business compels me to do it. I had Bronchitis, and also rheumatism for a long time. Here is a
