the jar, was repulled by the outer coating, and vice versa. He suspended a cork ball, which received its charge from the outer coating, and found it to be ropelled by a wire in connection with the inner coating; he further made wires from the outer and inner coating come within an inch or so of each other. Between those wires he sus pendod the cork ball, which oscillated until the jar had lost all its electricity. On the basis of those experiments Franklin tired to explain the behaviour of the Leyden jar. At the same time he laid down a law of elec. tricity, that when two oppositely charged conductors, separated by an inaulator, are brought near together they will attract each other. Franklin, one of America's greatest citizens, was born in 1706. Un his statue is the appropriate opitaph. He snatched the lightning from heaven, and the sceptre from tyrants. But it O was not to be, for "Dione" picked up the 1 wind again and rounded the mark first. 13 Followed by "Vernon" she set across to the Cuat Rock Buoy with her boom on the 97 starboard side; "Vernon," having jibed, had hers on the port side.
