Some posthumous reminiscences of Lord Rowton are published in the Nineteenth afford entertaining Century and naturally

sidelights upon the personality of Lord

Beaconsfield, Vory interesting was his account of the way in which he became Mr Disraeli's private secretary. They met at a country house where Lord Rowton, as quite s young man, entertained the company by -singing nigger songs and dancing`n break. down: Mr Disraeli was delighted, and the next day ho went up to him and thanked bim for his performance. Mr Corry, as he thon was, said: 'Ah, you think I played the fool Mr. D'sraeli: No you pleased me so much that I want you to come and be my impresario, and the bargain was there and then concluded.'

This recalls a story of Lord Derby's private secretary, Sir Patrick Talbot. One -day, when a large party was present at Knowsley, Lord Derby burat out at the tablo with the romark: “It's nourioue thing, one never known what a lot of fools there are in England until one becomes Prime Minister. Thereupon Talbot, at the other end of the table, said: "Yes, and one never known what a-fool a be until one becomes Prime Minister

The English representatives put forward four points, which were described as an ultimatum for the acceptance of Russia The Russians at once said that theso points were of so great importance that they must refor them to their Em- peror, So the Congress was adjounied for a few days while they despatched a high diplomatist. Lord Beaconsfield told Lord Rowton that he thought it impossible for Russia to concede these points. If sho refused ho intended to return at once to England and declare war upon Russia,

Science knows Lo nationality, its revelations benefit all mankind. For instance, the discovery and use of chloroform has averted a world of pain, of physical anguish among people of all countries. It is not too much to hope that Science, aiding the community of Interest, is destined finally to bring about univeral brother- hood. When critially examined, differences between the races prove far less important than the is generally anpposed. The blood of a Kaffir and the blood of a white man look just alike under all scientific tests. Near'y all of the bost- known diseases fod their victims among all races; and Indigestion, in particular, afflicts the miner and the mountaineer, the millionaire and the labourer, indifferently. Bolb sexes, of every age and occupation, are liable to it, and

its prevalence is the cause of much pecuniary Jose and distress.
