Dramatis persona: Two pedestrians and a lonely looking policeman. The pedestrians had arrived at the Hall ten minutes too early for the concert and were returning from the entrance lead- ing to St Andrew's Hall to consume refreshments at the King Edward Hotel. The policeman was marching up and down outside in the cold, and what his thoughts were will perhaps never be known. Probably in his dreams he was for the moment controll- ing the traffic in a congested London thoroughfare. The pedestrians naturally took the nearest way to the Hotel and had hardly noticed the presence of the officer of the law until he approached and tapped one of them on the shoulder. GOING TO A REVIEW.

Wild Scenes in Tokio.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Something more extraordinary than the usual Bank-Holiday rush at home was witnessed at Shimbashi Station for twelve hours before the naval review. Tokio people began to leave the capital early on Sunday morning, (October 22) and thereafter, all through the day and night, the station was packed with human beings first beniaging At six o'clock on Sunday evening the scene in the station was one no: to be forgotten. There was no order in the struggle for the Booking office, each was for himself, and in the prolonged scramble many women wore roughly treated. The Marquess Nabeshima was among those.

booking offices and then boarding trains, spot goods and to arrive. Medlum and CONTRACTORS & HOUSEBUILDERS. Hon. C. W. Dickson, F. Salinger, Esq.

Fron six o'clock special trains were run at intervals of from sixteen to twenty minutes, but with the departure of each train larger crowds were left on the platform than were carried in the care. There was a stampede for every train, and the personal risks run, especially for the women, in getting aboard, were by no means fow. The screams of women and children could be occasionally heard above the roar of human voices. his sort of thing continued until near midnight, when there seemed to be a gradually alackening of traffic. This was only tom- porary, however, for the ungovernable crowds were soon in evidenco again. At 3 a.m. two overflow booking offices

outside were put up

the station. Disorder reigned in and outside the sta tion until eight o'clock on Monday morn ing, when authority was once more asserted. That auch a remarkab'o crush occurred is not to be wondered at when it is consider.d that throughout the night streams of people wore flowing towards Shimbashi.

It is impossible to estimate the number of people within a few thousands who entered Yokohama on Sunday and Monday. but it is put at between two and three hun-,

died thousand. From all parte of the coun- try, by all the roads and railroads, the people came in masses, numbers of them having wisely made provision for a night out and carrying supplies of food, &c. While every eminence along the coast was black with spectators on Monday, it is estimated by the police that over a hundred thousand persona woro accommodated (for a consideration which meant à harrest for enterprising business men) in lighters and other vessels, The railway authorities estimate that nearly three hundred thousand persons ontored Yokohama by rail, and when the review

was over thero was such a rush for the station as "never way. The station staffs had to be placed to guard closed doors so that the excited multitudo outside should not swamp the station and sweep every- thing before it. The situation was a serious one for the officials. Windows were smashed and other damage done, but the crowd was good-humoured and no.hing

had no chance to roach home that day and The spent Monday night in the streets. hotels wore all overcrowded and thousands walked to Tokio.
