told of an agreement whereby special The Woll-known Steamer

counsel was employed by his Company in

its territory, and the expeuse was shared by all. He never heard of money being paid to influence legislator,

Edward I. Devlin, the real estato manager of the New York Life forthe United States and Canada, was called to testify to the cost of the building owned by the Society in Paris. It was broughtout that the Paris building was carried on the books of the

one

Company at a valuation of $1,102,604, whereas with the original cost and impro- vements $2,533,104 actually was paid, over million Leing charged off the valuation on the books of the company. Mr Devlin maid the pet income of the building to the New York Life was one and a ball per cent. of the actual amount invested, or between 3 and 9 per cent of the amount on which

it was carried on the books.

Not the least important development of the day was the appearance on the stand of Jacob H. Schiff, President of the banking. firm of Kuho, Loed and Company, Mr. Schiff was the first witness, and remained ou the stand until 2 o'clock. He em- phasized his remarks frequently with rap pings on the table, raising his voice until he almost shouted. During his testimony, too Mr Schiff made the charge that the minutes of the Finance Committee regard ing a corain meeting wen falso. He later qualifed that, however, by saying that if the transaction under consideration, o e in Union Pacific Preferred, was actually made, he did not hear of it, though he was present at the meeting. Again, during his testimony regarding the power of the Equitable Finance Committee, Mr Schiff waxed warm in his explanation, and said that the entire Committee was at the mercy

of one man.

to s-Japanese residing in New York. Great care is exorcised by the im-. migration inspectors in admitting Japa- nese women, as procurers in this country often pass as their husbands. In a very few weeks after they arrive they are placed in questionable houses. When a Japanese moots one of the women at the steamer, neither the man nor woman is emitted to leave the ship until the in- spectos have made a thorough investigation, after which the couple must be married according to American laws. Olton the men who import the women to this country fail to put in an appearance and the women are sent back to Japan. It is often the care that the men are arrested as procurers and deported. The women are not permit. ted to enter the country unless the inspec- tor are satisfied they come to join their busbands. In several instances couples have been arrested and deported after resid- ing in the country for a year.
