DIFFICULTIES OF THE

AUTOMOBILIST.

BERLIN, Aug. 20.

A new difficulty has arisen for automo- bilists in Germany,

A' Berlin gentleman motoring through the Mark Brandenburg some days age reached the little country town of Baruth at about eleven o'clock one evening. As booths were being erected on their side of the main street in preparation for the local fair, he was afraid someone might suddenly come out of the narrow passages, and not hearing his approach, cross the road in front of him. To avoid any possibility of an accident, be

therefore blow his signal-horn repeatedly ·

as he passed along the street.

This had a curious effect. Not only did numbers of the inhabitants appear at the windows in their night attire asking what was wrong, but the members the fire brigado fushed to their posts thinking » fire bad broken out. The automobilist ignorant of all this excitement, pat up for the night at the 'Gast-Haus, and was not a little surprised the next i orning when bo was cited before the magistrate for disturb- ing the peace of the community. He was compelled to leave his name and addrese, and his case has just been tried at the legal

court.

The accused pleaded that he had acted only in accordance with police instructions when he warned possible passera hy of his presence, and that he could not be to blame if his signal-horn produced, notes, exnotl similar to those of the town fire-alarm, Hon added that ho bad resolved to profit by bss experience at Baruth, but in another town had been fined for not sounding his horn sufficiently loudly.

The Court decided, nevertheless, that by repeatedly sounding his signal horn during the night the accused seriously disturbed the peace and rest of the townspeople, and sentenced him to a fine of 15 marks.
