THE NEST-BUILDING AND. HYSTERIA OF BIRDS,

In Bird Life Glimpses' by Mr Edmund Selous there are some extremely interesting remarks on birds and their habits. Thus, he says of the blackbird's movements while building :-

Those seemed to me to partake largely of an costatic--one might almost say a be atific-nature, so that there was a large margin of energy over and above the actual business of building.... The wings of this blackbird were, half spread out, and would, I think, have drooped-an action most characteristic of sexual excitement in birds-had not the edge of the nest support. ed them, and I particularly noted the qpasmodic manner in which the tail was from time to time bent down. It is true that it then tightly clasped as one may almost call it the rim of the nest, pressing hard against it on the outer aide. But though such action may now have become part of a shaping process, yet it way 1376 impossible for me, when I saw it, not to

think of the peewit in which something. markedly similar could have answered 'no

It is, naturally, only in those birde

are said to build no nest at all, says - writer in the Daily News, that this origin of the habit of west-building referred to by Mr-Selous can be studied. MYSTIFIED PIGMIES.

Wild Delight over the Gramophone.

Armed to the teeth with bows and arrows and spears, dressed in their most gorgeous clothes, and decorated with beads, brace- lete, earrings, nose ringe, anklets, etc., the Pigtales at present in London recently crossed from the Hippodrome to the officen of the Gramophone Company in a four- wheeled cab. At each window an armed man-stood ready to guard againat a surprise attack. The two women of the party sat silent, only speaking when spoken to, and carrying the drums and other impedimentà of their lords,

Inside the record-taking chamber at the Gramophone Co.'s offices the eyes of the pigmies opened in absoluta estonial.ment, They could hear a man whistling in the corner, but could not ses him. They were told there was no man, but were incredu- lous. A council of war wis held, and then,: andor the direction of the chief Bokance, the warriors spread themselves across the room, and crouching forward, each with his spear in his right hand, slowly advanced. Every inch of the chamber was carefully ex- plored and by means of a sweeping 'move- ment the whistling gramophone was encircl- ed and oxamined. It was then taken to pieces to satisfy them; but they remained incredulous and mystified.

Laughing songa delighted them, and they rolled upon the floor with "gles "as the gramophone laughter rose higher and higher.

Afterwards Bokane and Matuko stepped forward, and standing in front of a funnel projecting from arab Foreen, they sang their folk songs to the accompaniment of dram and stick music. Matoka next talked in Pigmy language with the interpreter fon the second record. For the third the chief Bokane, Matuka, and the interpreter dis cuesca various topion.

It is anticipated that in due course the master recorda will be offered to the British

pseum.

Man Stabbed in the Back.

A great deal of excitement was caused in the vicinity of the Ko Shing Theatre, West Point, during the tiffin hour to-day by a man being attacked in the street and stabbed. The usual crowd of Chinese were in the street at the time when one of the pedestrians was suddenly heard to cry out, and then to fall in the roadway. A crowd at ones collected and it was found that the man had been stabbed from behind in the right side.

The Strange Story of Her Un. published Book.

The funeral took place at Cartmel on September of Mins Edith Allonby, the Lancaster schoolmistress who recently com mitted suicide. Miss Allonby left a written atatement, in which she said :-

I have written a book (I wrote it four years since) which contains one of either two things-truth, or page upon pago of blaspheniy. I know it to be truth, but so simple that the world can hardly recognise it, and while I stand in the light I am afraid it cannot be seen at all. When I am gone, And when it once has a fair chance of being read and discussed as it deserves to be, it

ing money willingly with the one end in 2 view of making an opening for it, but I. afraid, so far as it is concerned, I am as near to it as I was four years since. Had The Fulfilment' been less near to God and less sacred to me, I had fought for it well with earthly wespons; but it was given to me out of the great silence, and I must give it to the world the same. That is the simple, honest truth of the whole matter. I have died to give God's gift to the world with as little stumbling-block as possible. It appears that Miss Allonby had publish ed two works with a London firm, anony mously. She had private means, and took up teaching and literature from choice, and not of necessity. Her family aro in posses sion of the manuscript of "The Fulfilment, and it is stated that the Rev. H. W. Mecres is acting as their literary adviser.

In this connection, we (London Standard) have received the following letter:-

Sir,-As the reader responsible to the publishing firm to which the late Miss Allonby's book, The Fulfilment,' was recently submitted, your courtesy may allow me a few words of explanation. Both the firm in question (who have already published Miss Allonby's 'Mari gold' and 'The Jewel Sowers,' anony- monely, at her own wish) and myself are, and were...enthusiastic admirers of her work. But she had certain religious fantasies, which; alwsya mado considerable revision needful. I accordingly reported

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanaq Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Taul during the years 1887-8-9. ·

The zero of the table corresponds with the zeu of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts, which has been found to be 4 faof 3 inches below mention level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gaugo at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.

Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
