Observations from Various Points.

New Yong, Aug. 30.

A special to the Sun from Guetaluma, Algeria, saya The observation of the collpao hore was in splendid weather. The corona was very brilliant. It presented features that were expected on account of the period of solar activity, that is, the corons was not very extensivo, but was dis- tributed evenly round the sun, Brilliant red protuberances of hydrogen at the edge" of the sun were perceived at the beginning and end of the period of totality. Bailey's beads were also observed,

The fempomature foll five degrees con. tigrade during the obstruction. The so- called eclipse wind rose at the beginning of the totality, and at the same time was seen on the ground, a moving shadow in stripos, a phenomenon which has not yet been ex.. plained. The American" satronomical expedition, headed by Rear Admiral Chester, superintendent of the United: Naval Observatory, succeeded in obtaining a splendid photograph of the eclipes. Business is practically at a standstill, the market having apparently arrived at a *marking time stage with operators, and -ovon investors, sitting on the force awaiting the first decisive sign of that anticipated Improvement in things goperally which has been almost universally expected after the 4

In the early part of the week a fow small lots changed hands at $9-12, and 8905 and latter at 8910 The market closes steady at $906. Nationals unchanged and without business.

CIVIL SERVICE V. POLICE.

The form shown by some of the con. testants was good, the best man out being Brückner, to whom the good showing mado

by König's crew must be attributed, as the 10 stroko himself rowed poorly, failing to finish at all well. Köhler, who is a finished ear, rowed splendidly, backing up Murray well. The latter is a hard-working oar, but at present be rows short, due to want of condition. Plenty of training will enable Murray to get further forward and row his full weight. Another oar who showed out well was Ortlepp. He is a powerful rower and will hon useful heavy-weight if he pays more attention to the leg drive.

Superintendent Marks said that at the polico station Mrs Winslady made tho following statement :- She had driven me to desperation, and hor father well knows.

In oxcavating the floor of the Samwel cave a great quantity of animal bones was

unearthed, one of the most important of which being a nearly complete skeleton of this large animal, while in other portions of the cave were found the skull and and horns of another individual of the same species, besides much fragmentary material. The

romains of the main skeleton were found in a shallow deposit in the deepest chamber of this cave at a depth of six inches to two feet. The bones were covered with stalag- mites, and these had aided much in pre- Burying them intact.

A careful study of all the material avail. able convinced the Berkeley geologists that they had stumbled upon an entirely new genus, the skeleton representing a type hitherto unknown to science. The nearest animal akin to it was the 'ouceratherium,' No. 37, D'AGUILAR STREET. or beautifully horned beast,' whose

McCloud river caves, Like this later animal, the preptoceras' bolonged roughly in the sheep family, although its similarity in many particulars to the goat and ante. lope are unmistakeable. It had the hand- some horns of a cow, with the skull of a sheep and the legs o a goat. Roughly tracing its allied forms, the Berkeley sciontia's have found that its ancestry must have been similar to that of the modern musk-ox, speciriens of which

are now to be found on the American con. tinent in remote corners of Alaska. In the development of this particular genus tho phy-ical surroundings of the 'preptoceras played an important part, and it specialised

Altogether I have used six boxes of Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, and they have done mo moro good than all the doctors medicine. I sleep better at nights, my appetite is improved, and I am a healthier woman now than I have been for many years.

You are welcome to publish those facts, and I shall be glad if my experienco proves helpful to other mothers.
