BURGLARS' HAULS IN NEW

YORK

NEW YORK, Sept. 2, Burglars are inskiing rich hauls in the aristocratic residence district of the Wost End: Palatial mansions whose owners aro absent abroad or rusticating at country pinces, have been looted of their valuables and the losses are estimated by the police at hundreds of thousands of dollars,

José Aymar's residence at 76 East Fifty- fourth Street has been plundered during the past wook of jewelry, bric-a-brac, paintings, silver, etc., worth, it is alleged, more than $100,000. Mr A. mar is a millionairo lawyer, who married Mies Lillian Labau Vanderbilt. The family is in Canda. A caretaker of adjacent proporty. heard noises in the house during the last week, but paid no attention to thom until Thursday evening, when he saw three uspicious-looking men walk out of the basement door carrying bundles and bags, and notified the police. The pollos tele. graphed Mr Aymar, and he wired his valet ́ to take charge, of the house. There were

$200,000 worth of paintings, jewelry, silver and bric-a-brac in the house,' said the valot,

and fully half of it is gone,!

Another big burglary and a melodramatic arrest in the aristocratic quarter caused considerable stir among the police. How

much loot was procured from the home of D. E. Seymour Willard, a broker, which was ransacked from top to botton, cannot

be learned, The Willard residence in

the family's absenca lato on Wednesday or early Thursday morning. A survey of the house after the burglary, was discovered showed that the robbers, while probably amateurs at the work, were connoisseurs, for they had carefully selected the goods they wished to take and left the rest spread over the floora. o large an amount was taken that a waggon must have been used to cart it off.

The caretakers carefully inspected the 'mansion on Wednesday night. One return- ed Thursday, and ho could scarcely open the door because of a barricade of furniture. From cellar to attic everything in the house had been moved and every closet and drawer that might have held anything of valua had been examined. The burglare took paintings, rugs, small pieces of furniture and bric-a-bras, and breaking open several trunks, managed to find a case of jewels which had been hidden aray.

The robbery of the home of James E. Marshall, also a stockbroker, furnished the material for the melodramatic arrest. A bicycle policeman was informed by a pedestrian that someone was prowling through the broker's bome in the absence of the family. The officer placed his wheel against a ten foot wall sorrounding the yard and using it as a ladder, scaled the top. Crouching behind the wall was a man, who surrendered at the point of the police. man's revolver, The officer reached down, grasped the interloper by the collar and assisted him to the top of the wall from which the two men dropped to the street. On being searched at the station' a large. quantity of valuab'e jewele was found on the burglar's person. The man claimed to bo a French sculptor.

General Grant lived for some years in the house the culprit had looted.

Another big loss of jewels was reported Jate last night by Mrs William C. Do Witt, the wife of a Brooklyn attorney. She stát ed that her trunk had been broken open at A summer hotel on. Shelter Island and diamond rings valued at 83,530 stolen. No trace of the thievos could be found.

Those are plain truths, known to everybody. What is not nearly so well-known is that one may eat an abundanes of good food and yet starve, deriving from it, instead of nourishment, only intolerable pain, Where that is the case, the sufferer is a victim of indigestion.

There are thousands of such sufferers in every part of the world. Among them, until recently, was Mrs. Anna Olwage, of 104, Bultfontein Road, Kimberley, G. C. For more than five years I suffered from a disordered stomach," sho says in a letter dated December 5th, 1904- "I was nearly always constipated, which induced me to resort to purgatives; but their only effect. was to make me worse. Headache and Sleepless- ness, no commonly attending constipation, troubled me greatly, None of the many medicines I tried seemed to touch my complaint, until I came to Mother Seigel's Syrup. My.. husband's attention was called to that remedy by a very remarkable cure it effooted in Johan nesburg. It proved a lucky thing for me, for to-day I am as well and strong as any woman twenty years younger, a fact due entirely to Mother Selgel's Syrupā pilska

Hardly less strong is the testimony of Airs. Annio Palm, of 20, Bartel's Place, Beaconsfield, C. C., who writes thus on December 6th, 1904 : Three years ago I suffed badly from constipa- tion, for which I quite failed to find any means of relief. At last 1 consulted a doctor and it "proved a fortunate thing for me that I did so, for he advised me to take a course of Mother Seigel's Syrup. Two bottles were sufficient for my cure, and in gratitude I have ever since recommended that medicino to my friends. Beveral of them have derived great benefit from

The experience of Mrs. Annie Albany, of Tucker Street, Wolbuter, Jeppestown, Transvaal, though slightly different, is fully as convincing as that of Afre, Olwage and Mrs. Palm.

Refering to the proposal that after the period of 50 yearn the whole line should be- come the property of the Government, it is reported that Yu did not agree but asked that a perpetual concession should be

granted.

Respecting the profits to be given to the Government, only u per cent. was allowed. I hear from reliable sources that unless the Chinese Government grants the con- cession asked for, i.e. perpetual concession, the promotors will give the matter up.

JUSTICE IN CHINA.

A Family's. Suicide.

(From Our Correspondent).

CANTON, October 4. The severe reprimands which the Vicoroy of Canton visited upon the local officials of Weichow district for their inability to deal effectively and summarily with the bandits which have been troubling the people, have frightened them into an activity which is as vigorous as the previous temporising was reprehensible.

They have indeed roused themselves and

have determined to uproot the trouble, even though the innocent and the guilty suffer together. The consequence is that a respectable and peaceable farmer was arrested and flung into prison. He was unable to bear the implied disgrace and therefore got hold of some opium and com- mitted suicide. His wife and sons on hearing what had happened at once followed in his footsteps, and so a whols family has become extinct.

If the innocent cscape the hands of the bandits, they fall into the power of the officials. Hardship or death muat in any case be their doom.

The negotiations at Portsmouth led on August 19th to a refusal of the demauds of the Japanese Government regarding the cossion of the island of Saghalien, the pay- went of a war indemnity, the surrender of our ships lying in neutral harbours and limitation of our forces in the waters of the Pacific Ocoan. After further negotiations, Japan on August 20th yielded all our con ditions, but asked for the return of that portion of Saghalien occupied by Japanese troops which is the part held by Japan until 1875 and thon ceded by Treaty to Russia.

PRETORIA, Sept. 4. - Questions addressed to the Legislative Council on the subject of crime amongst the Chinese employed on the Rand have elicited that up to July 18 thero representing onesoventh per cent. of the Chinese population. Of the other offences had been 31 convictions for serious offences, coming within the magistrates' jurisdiction, desertions and other infringements of the ordinances accounted for nearly 2000 of the 2500 convictions,

Considering that the population has been increased by 46,000 of the rough mining class, whilst the police force has not been increased, it is maintained that there has bo found in connection with a similar in- boon a smaller increase in crime than would crease in a corresponding class from any white nation.

Mount-street, Walsall, England, (who suf fered for twelve years with advanced Anemia and Indigestion), to the Walsall Advertiser. Mra Eades gave the following account of her plight :--

My lips were the same colour Es muy face-chastly white. My appetite was very poor. 1 b came positively afraid to eat, for everything I took lay upon my chest like lead. There was never any warmth in my bady; I seemed quito blood. less. I was always crouching over the tire, I was so cold.

I went to the best physic'ams. If I had known then that my troubles would vanish when I got new blood, and that Dr Williams' Pink Pills would make now, rich blood. I should not have taken so much ordinary medicine. The splendid set of teeth I used to possess have become decay- ed through continually taking iron. But my Anemia only grew worse, and I was at the point of desper-tion.

'Relief came when my mother bought me a box of Dr Williams Pink Tills. You can judge by my appearance now how much I owe to these pills and how deeply grate ful I am.'

When did you noto an improvement 7' *After taking the first few doses the| colour began to return to my lips and obocks, I was able to sleep, and í háð a wonderful appetite. People are struck with the change, and cannot understand it till tell them it is due to Dr Williams' Pink Pille,

* I feel better than our I did in my life! These are wonderful words from a woman to whom life had been a burden. All Mra Eades' troubles arose from lack of blood. Everybody knows the pain in the stomach when loud hunger calls,' but in Mrs Endes' case every vein and nerve in her body was crying out for its natural food – blood. It was hy making now rich Hond that Dr Williams' link Pilla cured Mrs Exdes
