THE
GERMAN INFANTRY
EQUIPMENT.
According to ■ Berlin correspondent, the substitution of a loose kuspsack, such as is used in mountain climbing, for the stiff calf leather cao now carried by the German Infantry seems to be coming nearer realisa. tion. The present knapsack with its nuta- erous contouts remains in a fixed position on the Infantryman's back, and he has besides to carry attached to his bolt his bayonet, spade or pick, 30 cartridges in two packages, and a bread lin. Non- commissioned officers have also a telescope and frequently an Army revolver. The military authorities favour the loose clotli knapsack, because its weight can be shifted from one position to another on the back, and, they have, moover, decided that nothing shall be carried in it but body linen, cooking utensils, and a few small private requisitos. The weight would thus be reduced by five kilogrammes, which corresponds with the alleviation 1376 granted by the French Military Council. The rest of the baggage would in future be convoyed in baggago waggons. With the

new knapsack, however, the Infantryman
could easily take with him into action 150 cartridges in 10 packages, and would thus not so soon be dependent on n supply from the company store in the baggage waggon behind him.

The opinion is becoming strengthened COOKING done by a Europein Cook. ALL KINDS of LIQUOR served with
that the battleship •'Mikaon" was sunk as the result of an accident says the Japa Chronicle. The place where the war-ship is lying in the harbour of Sasoho is six fathoms deep, and as the depth of the battleship below the water line is 27 feet, the upper works are therefore above water,
According to information so far received,
the damage to the ship is not so serious na at first reported, and it is expected that she will be fully servicable when raised and -repaired. The explanation given for the heavy loss of life is that the men on board in time of fire have great difficulties in escaping, as they have to make their way from below by narrow passages. At a time of peril they are almost, entombed, and in case of five are liable to be suffocated by -smoke. It is supposed that the bodies of most of those who perished are now in tho gunken vessel.

DESTINATION,
MAIL DUE LONDON,
The whole town is in wourning for the loss of so many brave men.
The Orka Mainichi publishes the fol lowing account of the fire on the "Mikasa"
as rolated by an oyowitness --
BOON
At about 20 minutes after midnight on the 10th instant, the muffled sound of an explosion was heard in the harbour of Sascho, and heavy smoke and flames were seen rising. It was soon known, that a war ship was on fire, and great excite ment prevailed in the town, but nothing could be done, as the harbour is strictly closed against the public. It was learned that the ship on fire was the flag. ship"Mikasa," and this naturally in creased the public excitement. The flag ship entered the port on the 8th instant, together with the 'Fuji,” “Asahi," "Shi- kishima" and "Kasagi," and the Aagship was lying abreast of the battlechip *Sagami" (formerly the Russian Peres viet"). Captain Ijichi, in command of the "Mikasa," could be seen on the bridge directing the operations of his men for ox- tinguishing the fire. Assistanco quickly wont from all the other ships in the har- bour, and efforts were made in vain to discover the place where the fire had ori. ginated. The heavy black smoke which was rising from the bottom in thick clouds scriously interfered with the operations of Shortly beforo 2 o'clock a tremendous explosion shook the town and the "Mikasa" at once bogan to settle. In
the men.
a few moments the monster ship was rest. ing on the harbour bottom.
So violent was the explosion that police. men on a steam-launch near by was knocked into the water by the vibration. For Tunately, the hopital ship “Kobo-maru” was present in the harbour the time, and the wounded were promptly attended to. Captain Ijichi cacaped unhurt.
From the above account it would seem that an explosion preceded the fire, which, with the report that heavy black smoke accompanied the outbreak, would seem to support the theory that the fire was due to the spontaneous combustion of guncotton,
The result of the Belfast election is Sir Daniel Dixon, Unionist 4,440, Mr Walker, Labour 3,960, This is to fill the place of Mr Haslett deceased:

pot in which the exhausted leaves aro allowed to romain, the liquor will be rank and unwholesome. The results will grow steadily worse, and the tea-pot will at length became quite unfit for use until it has been thoroughly cleansed and purified. If rofuse has accumulated in the human system through the occurrence of constipa tion, the whole body is rendered foul and unhealthy. Constipation and its results are speedily removed by Bile Beans, Mr S. P. Wenmoth, electrical engineer, 4, Alma Street, Southwick, Birmingham, England, says I found in the course of my profession that when I wont to a fresh town or district, the altered olimate had a very lowering and depressing effect upon me. When Igt to somo place for a sport time I suffered from constipa tion, depression and sleeplessness and got run down generally, During the day I had a helpless feeling and a desire to lie down all the time, though even that was a trouble, and then at night I could not go to sleep at all. The many pills I tried never gave me any benefit, until one day a little booklet was brought to the door describing the benefit a number of people had received through taking Bile Beads for Bilioueness, so I sent for a bottle. In a couple of daya I felt a little, botter, and at the end of the course I was cured, and completely too, for I have never been troubled with the
feelings since. I have never felt better Than I do at present, and I cannot speak too highly of Bilo Beans. I have given a lot of them away to neighbours, who toll ne they have received a lot of good. In fact, I have not heard a word against them yet. I shall always keep a bottle by me, and will recommend them to everybody who suffera, for they have done me so much rood that I feel it only right others should know of them,

That is what the Americans in Manila pretend to do, and insistence upon the little brown brother' policy was the crowning error in their ruling of a race that does not need sympathy or understand it. The Filipino accepts such condescension as a sign of weak
