MAIL STEAMER DEPARTURES.

Some boys were seen trying to open a box which had been taken from a truck in- the railway siding, and they refused to stop when threatened by a workman. On the lid being wrenched off, the box appear. ed to be full of Russian paper money. By its weight, however, it was evident that something else besides paper wag inside, and beneath the notes nently packed rolls of gold pieces were eventusly discovered... The news of the affair spread like wild. tire, and the local chief of the pollee being informed, officers were posted round the gonds station while investigation was made. The box opened was one of four, and the three others were still on the truck. On | 28 or 30 days being opened they wore also found to

contain money in notes and gold.

Altogether the mount is the boxes totalled just under a million rubbles- nearly £100, 00. The boxes had arrived from the Far East, and were described as ⚫household belonging. Each one bore the Red Cross stamp.

The whole affair Bavours strongly of officially-assisted misappropriation of Army or Red Cross funds. Ono newspaper has not hesitated to declare that the police at Samara improved the occntion by appro. priating a portion of the treasure during the official investigation.

Samara is 660 miles south-east of Mo ców, and is one of the. junction stations of the Trans-iberian Railway.

TWO SISTERS SAVED

BY MOTHER SEIGEL'S STAFF, FROM THE MISERIES OF INDIGESTION AND FERHAPS FROM DEATH:

When Mrs. Katie Marais, who resides at No. 1, Strand Street, Wort Bank, East London, 0.0., declaros that the lives of both herself and her sister were saved by the use of Mother "Seigel's Syrup, the assertion becomes important to the whole community in which Mrs. Marsis lives. She had been for four miecrable years greatly afflicted with complicated stomach troubles, ordinarily called iudigestion. When she bad grown tired of enduring her miseries, and almost beyond the hope of ever Pecoring relief from them, her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bouwer, of No. 46, Smith Street, West Bank, East London, advised her to try Mother Soigel's Syrup. Her sister had already used it, and know of its wonderful curativo 'power. So Mrs, Marais bevan sing it, with what good results sho to you the letter which follows, and which was dated January 4, 1905:-

For four years," she says, "I suffered from biliousness constipation, and pains across the chest, which I din informed is one of the symptons of indigestion. I did not know what It was to feel well during those long years; I was almost sfraid to eat anything, as I know it would make me vomit and retch afterwards.

I would lay down to rest, but there was little or no rest for me during the whole period of my illness; I would always wake up after a restless hour or two's sleep and wish for orning to arrive. No medicins seemed able

to help me in the list. My bowels also gave me a deal of trouble for days at a time I wontd be constipated, and such severe headaches would follow,

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, Amorien, Canada, and Australia. Coast porte, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports.

All

the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to these vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. maile usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about

"It was through my sister I heard of your Mother Seigel's Syrup, and I may say she voices my sentiment with reference to its good qualities. It saved her life, and I can honestly say that bad I not taken it in time I would not bo here to-duy to record these facts of my care." After using four bottles I was put on the right road to regain my former good health, and all these unplossant symptoms are now of the past, the result being dao only to the ourative powers of Mother Seigel's Syrup 1 have recommended it to several of my friends.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bouwer wrote as follows ou January 5 1905 from her home in Smith Street, West Bank My life was despaired of gome little time back. I had been very ill with yellow, janudico and became so weak that I had to be fed thronglf a tube. The doctors did their best for me, but I became worse and worse, and all hopes of moving my life were given up. A friend who saw my condition thought it was my weak stomach (which could not retain food) that osused my trouble, and that something should be used first to strengthen my stomach. My friend's reasoning saved my life for Mother Seigel's Syrup whe given in small gneufilies from time to time during the day, and very soon I commenced to feel very hungry and niso that I had new life given me. Extensive Gambling Rald,

There was an exciting econo at the Naval Yard Extension at about 7.30 last evening when one of the most extensive gambling raids that have been made in the Colony for some years past was succo-sfully carried

out.

For some time past the police have known that gambling on an extensive scale has been going on in the Naval Yard Extension promises and that elaborato precautions were taken by the gamblers against surprise. Yesterday evening, how. over, shortly before 7 o'clock, a number of Chinese constables, dressed as coal coolies, sampau mon, etc., made their way into the yard and mingled with the gamblers without exciting their suspicions and watched the games that were in progress. Upwards of 200 men were gambling in different parts of the yard, and by 7.31

a further squad of European, Indian, and Chinese police were on the Econo. Chief Detective Inspector Hanson had charge of the police, who tatalled 40, and having divided his men into three parties, of which Sergeant Garrod had charge of one and an Indi n officer the other, at a given sigual the truck was made from

three different directions and the various groups of gamblers surrounded.

A MIGHTY BLAST.

THE CHINA MAIL.

A New York telegram states that on July 12 Miss Ethel Foster, the young daughter of an engineering contractor, touched an electric button at Portsmouth 45 up harbour, New Hampshire, and blew tona of dynamite. This was the culmina, tion of three years' work designed to open up the entrance of Portsmouth Navy Yard, which has been blooked by Henderson's Point, a solid rock 310 ft, long, and 400 ft. wide. It took 12 months to build the haga cofferdam encompassing the rock in order to blast it. The place looked like a minefield, with a range of wires covering the whole of the point jutting into the river. The utmost precaution was taken for the explosion, the Government orders

should remain open. The electric button was 1,000ft. from the nearest dynamite. The initial roar of the mighty blast was followed by reports like the rapid firing of artillery. Great sections of rock were hurled skyward, followed by the cheers from the delighted throngs on the shore. Ten minutes after the explosion scores of steamers and yachts swarned over the spot where the point once lay, picking up hun. dreds of fish killed by the explosion.

A NEW AND DESTRUCTIVE

SHELL.

The Isham shell, which it is claimed will sink the largest battleship in three minutes,

and is the most powerfu' ever made, will be tested to-morrow morning (says a tele ratn dated August 9) on Sandy Hook proving grounds. The shell is constructed of 900 pounds of cast steel and carries a bursting charge of 129 pounds of dynamite. A twelve inch gun will be used for firing the projectile. The gan will be mounted on an improvised carriage behind a shield. The experiment is being held at the instance of the Board of Ordnance and Fortifications. Inventor Isham will be present to act as gunner. A piece of Harveyised steel twelve inches think will be placed 300 feet in front of the shell at an angle of 46 degrees to the line of fire. The shell is backed up by a fortificatian of ork against a mound of sand, which has sufficient force of resistance to permit the full power of the charge to take effect. Carrying its 129 pounds of hidden destruction, the shell will be hurled at the s'eel at a velocity of about 2,000 feet a second. Although made of nitro-glycerine and dynamite, the exp’o- sives are so fitted into the shell that an explosion is impossible until it comes into forceful contact with some hard object.

I began to take them at once, and I h-ve only once had a Bilious Attack since, and that was just when I was only starting with this wonderful medicine. Thave had no attack for many months.'

WHAT FOLLOWS INDIGESTION, Sick headache and biliousness follow on Indigestion because food that we have not strength to digest ferments and poisons tho blood. Dr Williams' Pink Pills purify and enrich the blood. Purgatives never cured Indigestion, They sometimes relieve it for

a time, but they always weaken.

THE WAY TO BE CURED. Pitiable is the stato of those who cannot digast. Their food becomes a curse, the pleasure of the tably a mockery. Strength fails; we cannot work if we are not nourish- ad. The robust-those who are strong and pure blooded-never have indigestion. Pr Williams Pink Pills make people strong because they mako pure blood. In this way they havo cured not only Indigestion but also Anemia, Consumption, Fits, Eczema, Kidney Disease, St. Vitus' Dance, Paralysis, Locomotor Ataxy. Dr Williams' Medicine Co., Holborn-vinduct, London, send a bott'e post free for 2s. 9d., or six for 13s. 9d.. but the pills can be had wherever m-dicines are sold if purchasers will take care to ask for and insist on having Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Palo People. Substitutes may be offered, but they will not cure, and wis people avoid altogether shops where substitutes are offered.
