But soldom in society as it is at present constituted do peoplo's hearts expand to each other in the ́genial glow of a mutual desire to please.

We all of us know all about the simple life. In the song it is asserted that the lark said, 'Give us glory,' but the dove said, 'Give us peace.' The dove, however, indignantly repudiated this assertion. She declared that what she did say was, 'Give us love, and give us peace. And there is niach to be said for the dove's contention.

The following tablo is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and | Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. All the American steamers call,at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually ronel London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days

CHINESE IN AUSTRALIA.

'Too often in the world's history has the settlement of a question been delayed and then finally settled in a panic. To a large extent this was done in the eighties 'in | Australia in regard to Chinese immigra tion,' says Senator Pulsford. He admits that it can readily be shown that the im migration, mainly Chiarse, into the colonics of New South Wales, Victoria, and, after wards, into Queensland, roached dimen. sions that made action necessary, but his argument is that the restrictive legislation became panicy-an abrupt 'slamming of the door. He shows that in the New South Wales census in 1856 the report: stated the Chinese cans without their wives or families and numbered 1800. In 1861 the census gave 12,988 Chi- nese (including only two females), this was equal to 37 in each 1000 of the po pulation. To compare figures, the Senator points out, which consist wholly of males, and those adults, with figures, including men, women, ard children, fails to give an accurate comparison. When wo take only the males abovò 15 years, wo find that 99 1000 males were Chinese-a much in every more important matter. In Victoria, in 1861, each 1000 of the total population included 40 Chinese, but taking the males above 15, each 1000 males included 104

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- tor Polios Basin at Taim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9--

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 8 inches bolow mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add S feet 4 inches, and on the gaugo at Lamont Dock, Aberdeon, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.

Add 23 minutes 18 seconds to the figures given below to correct to Zone time.
