An extension is being made to the western suburbs (Honam side) and already the poles and some of the wires aro in position. with the Viceroy's orders, recently con- fisentod the monk's property.

The place was famous for its idols (upwards of 100 in number) and the problem arose as to how these wore to be disposed of. At first it was considered that the provincial purse might bo benefited by selling them, and as only foreigners would

buy they would be thus got rid of. This was, however, likely to lead to adverse criticism and it was deered best to have the idols destroyed. In accordance with this decision the idols were all burned by Tuotai Wen Tsung Yao, the Viceroy's Foreign Secretary', on 1 Saturday."

Thotai Wen has also Yeen appointed to pull the monastery prenses down and sell the land as soon as possible. The proceeds of the sale are to be exponded in erecting a college for the benefit of the whole pro- vince. The Foreign Secretary is progressive man with advanced ideas and no butter official could have been chosen for the work.

Something Extraordinary.

He has a ready sale for them to Zoological Gardens and agents, and to the many individuals who have a fancy for wing these grotesque quardrupolls. A correspondent states that he went on an expedition with the young hunter. He writes:-

When we neared the marshes whore the alligators lurked, Jake, stopped and cut a cane a dozen or fifteen feet long, that he

the borders of a narrow channel of brown water that ho spoke of as an alligator aluc,' and which the alligator used as a highway when in search of food.

The creature had a hole just aside from
