SOME HIGH SCORES.
Judging from the high scores knocked up at Home recently, batsmen are in fino fettle And are being aided by beautiful weather, Playing against Hampshire the Australians scored 620 (Gregory 134, Hill 115, Noble 101 and Trumpor 92). On the first day's play 513 runs were compiled in less than five hours, which, it will be admitted, is fast scoring.
Although Trumper was not dostined to enjoy the good fortune of Hill, Noble, and' Gregory by scoring a century, he played by far the most attractive cricket of the day, and hit with great skill all round the wicket. The manner in which he hit balls from Baldwin off the middle stump

to square leg was positively amazing. He made his bout of 76 in 35 minuter, and was altogether only an hour and a quarter at the wickets. Except for a chance at second slip, his play was without fault.. Duff played recklessly, and after being twice badly missed in the slip, was eventually......... secured there by the home captain. Hill hit vory hard, cutting and driving with great force, and helped Trumper to put on 123 in IN CLACE KID, BOX CALF, 55 minutos. The 200 was scored in a hundred

Hill gave no chances, and has never played better. He hit a six and 16 fours, and Trumper a six and 14 fours, the sixes boing scored in an over from Baldwin, which Fielded 20 runs. CANTON NOTES.
From Our Correspondent.
THE VICEROY AND B CLAN..
CANTON, August 8. The Viceroy has recently expressed his determination never to expose his character to the change of napotism, whilst he rules over the Two Kwang. It is well known that theoretically, and, with fow excep- tions, actually no official is allowed to rule in the province which gave him birth. The Canton Viceroy is an exception to the general rule, having been born in Kwang-
si, and, what is more, owing to recent

THE VICEROY AND THE CANTON-HANKOW RAILWAY,
Though little advanco, as far as the out- sider can discover, appea, to have been made in the settlement of the difficulties which bristled around the Cauton-Hankow railway scheme, it is evident that things| are moving, and that obstacles are being looked at if not removed. H. E. is in correspondence....with the gentry and capitalists of the province, and yes- lang docu terday I cast my eyes over a ment, which emanated from fo Viceroy, dealing with the question. It is not ny intention to translate. this document, which deals with intricate financial pro bleins, as well as with the proposed scheme of management, in regard to which ap. parently I. E. differs in judgment from some of the influential men of Canton. I rofer to this matter simply to show that negotiations are still on foot, occupying the attention of the highest officials of the 'Canton province, and, with the vigorous Viceroy at the head of the concern, wo may venture to hope that wo are noaring the day when we shall see the work begun in oarnest, and all causes of disagreement removed,

Should American travellers, who visit Canton, refuse on account of the prosent boycott, to patroniso the Jade stone, Curio, Silk and other shops, would this not be a great less to the Chinese shop keepers?
Further, if Americans should rofuse to continue to buy matting, silk, firocrackers and other articles of nativo-manufacture- which can be bought in other countries- would this not prove very disastrous to the interests of the Chineso merchants? After referring to the two cases regarding the admission of further evidence the Chief Justico said that the present motion was an independent motion, nut in any sense an appeal from the Judge in Chambers. With regard to one point the motion was identical with the original motion and had the appellants limited the application to that point (tho evidence of the Tsang Shing Firm, Saigon) it seemed to the Chief Justico more than doubtful whether the learned Judgo would have refused it. If he had, it was conceivable that the present Court would have granted it. The conclu- sion arrived at by the Chief Justico was that where certain evidenco material to the CRSO
