DR, JAMES LEGGE.
Story of His Life,"
The life of Dr. James Logge has been written by Mia Helen Edith Logge, and published by the London Religious Tract Society. In reviewing the book a Home journal says:-Miss Leggy has given a-- simple, unembellished account of her. father's life. Dr. Legge went to Malacos in 1840 to prepare na a missionary to the Chinese. He early formed the opinion ́that missionaries abould seek to tralu up Chinamen themselves to be teachers wed evangelists to their countrymen He sought to train the pupila he had under him at Malacca in theology and Biblical science. He moved his whole establishment to Hongkong in 1849, where he remained, with occasional breaks and a run or two: home, till 187). Interspersed with his missionary and other religions duties he was hard at work at Ohinese: When nearing the completion of some of this translations he was mẹt with the problem of the expense of publication. Er Josaph Jardine promised assistance, but died b. kate the first volume was published. Tão asula- tance promised was, however, liberally given by his brother, Sir Robert Jardioo.. How these translations were continued in later years during the twenty years. Dr. Legge was Professor of Chipeso at Oxford will be known to many of our readers. Incidentally we are introduced to the old- controversy around the exact significance of Shang-ti, and have Dr. Legge's defense of 1376 the missionary connection with the Taiping
rebellion. Kindly words are mid of that: excellent man. Alexander. Wylie, whom --Legge found learning La:in ao that he could

Professor Legge's last twenty years in Oxford were those of the quiet scholar, though in appearance ho might up to the last have passed ae's Scottish farmer rather than a Sinologue. He was unaffectedly simple, kind and trae,' but he could be strong, omphatic, and almost dogmatic ori certain matters, though it was always the result of earnest conviction. His daughter has done well to publish this scoount, though an absence of dates at times is some what confusing to the reader.

Sir Evelyn Wood, V.O., telis this story,

Another story of Sir Evelyn Wood relates to a time when the 'Buffs' were quartered at Aldershot. A private of the corps was one day at the town station, wilking up and down the platform waiting for a train,... The general in command, Sir Evelyn Wood, was also at the station, alone, and in plain clothes; and, though one of the smartest dervants of the Crown, did not quite look the part in mufti. The soldier passed by and took no notice of him. "Come here my man. Do
know who I am?" asked the you General. No, I don't,' was the reply. I'm the General commanding the district, said Sir Evelyn. The private looked him up and down with an incredulous eye, and the, before turning on his-heel, retorted: "You just look hero! If Sir Evelyn heard you may that, why, he'd punch your ugly head ?!
When Sir Garnet. Wolseley was in Natal he called together a meeting of all the great chiefs, and sent a special invitation to the Zulu monarch to be present. Instead of complying with this request, Cetowayo caused a bag of wheat to be despatched to Sir Garnet, accompanied with a notification that the Zulu warriors were as numerous as- grains of wheat. It is not stated what effect this rejoinder had upon the allegory-loving king of the Zulus. Lord Wolseley, in the course of a lecture once told the following anecdote :—- One of his officers, who happeried to have a glass eye, was o'e day examining a prisoner, a zealous follower of the Mahdi • Why do DAVID SASSOON & CO., LD. you believe in the Mahdi?' asked the officer. Terrible Scenes.
“Quessa, July 2, 8.0 p.m.
With the Military Governor's pass, which Bad been previously withheld, I to-day gained access to the scenes, still cordoned by military and utterly desolate, of last Wednesday night's frightful human slaugh- tor, wreckugo, pillago, and destructive con- gration. Amid the heaps of rung and the intervening spaces ard left ghastly evid ences of the awful have wrought by the machine guns and the rifle volleye, in the broadly-spread and now sun-blackened blood-pouls. Thickly or thinly, theso horrid and horrifying stains cover th area of about a thousand serca. Eye-witnesses assure me that no fewer than 1890-persons wero killed that night, not counting the
3000 wounded, who have since succumbed. Once the murderous battle had commenced, the Cossacks, infantry, and machine-guns all fired at eight. The wounded only escaped by lying prone and in agony throughout the infernal night, scores of them being subsequently burned to death by the rapidly spreading flames. When ever and whorover wounded persong-men or women-ruse to their feet, of tried to crawl away from the enveloping fire, he or she was ruthlessly shot down again,
A People who had been hiding, when they were driven forth by the flames, fell on their knoes, imploring the solidery to spare their lives. They were ruthlessly riddled with bullets. The Cossacks and infantry, dealt with individuals and with amall groups; machine guns were used to στοπίε.
About a hundred men and twenty wo- mon, after pillaging the shipping stores, began a drunken orgie on the spirits, wine, and chump-gue which they had a ized. As they lay about sleeping on a coal heap, they sero riddled to death in cold blood by the military with two machine guns..
This, perh ps needs a brief explanation. At five o'clock in the evening the wreckage, the pillage, and the firing of stores wero po. ing on, and it would have been a fairly onay mattor for the abundantly numerous troops at hand to have driven the rabble section out of the neighbourhood, or to have arrest- od the authorities allowed the loot and areon to proceed until sundown, Then the victims, innocent and guilty together, wore encompassod and shot down like rabbits. The most dastardly part of the butchery was the closing scene at day dawn. The crowd of terrified people who had been hiding, and were all innoogut, fed up the Voyonni Spush, or the steeply-inclined thoroughfare leading from the pratique harbour and the Within the Trimoskaia to the city.. porches of the bridge at the head of the Atreet, and immediately under the Civil Governor's Palace and the Governor's eyes, machine guns were suddenly emplaced, and literally moved down the advancing It would have beon crowd of 200 people. perfectly easy to trap and to arrest them all, but no quarter was given to any person, regardless of sex and ago, on that awful night.

The-last, it is to be noted, has probably excited more alarm and resentment among our English friends and relatives-that is among those of them who write for the critical journals-than have been excited by any other instrument from across the 'pond. Take, for instance, the elision of the vowel 'u' from the word "hono(u)r,' etc. Here, if may be pardoned the con- fusion of metaphor, was the visible shit. boleth by which the true born Briton, the hoir of the uncounted wealth of English tradition, tested the respectability of writers and admitted them to, or excluded then from, the visiting is of literature. It was in vain to contend that honor was the legitimate descendent of the Latin word as it was used by the writers of the Grave of Cicero, or to point out that the 'u', which had crept in through the French, notoriously sprung front the baser colloquial speech of the Romans. The English critics would have none of it. It was as if each of them protested as to Literature, no matter of what intrinsic value or excellence, in the

It is to the interest of Government and nations that every servant of the public should be both intellectually and morally fit. Exams are often crammed for and the intellectually unfit scramble through: while practically no adequate attempt in made to test moral fitness of the candidates. Mind and morals being so closely allied, the Phrenologist, could give most valuable in formation and advice to authorities before appointments are made. He would have the British Government employ three well paid Phrenologists whose report on service candidates should bofiaal. This opens up an interesting vista. Would it be possible for Sandow, say, to cram up bumps' as now he adolesces muscles, so that the poor vic tim might squeeze through-and then bo considered fit for any post anywhere at any moment? Doan's Dinner Pills will give relief in a few hours, bus the sufferer should assist the medicine by taking, rest, keeping quiet, and avoiding worry. During an attack, abstinence from food and alcoholic stimulants is desirable.

After too beavy a meal, ono Doan's Dinner Pill will ward off any ill after-effect by giving the digestivo organs, the liver and bowels, the additional help they need. This medicine should always be kept handy, and a dose taken whenever you find your food repeat- ing or disagreeing with you.
