The Chronicle received the following ox ceedingly interesting letter from the Very Rer the Hon. William Henry Fremantle, Dean of Ripon, on the subject of Mr Parke's much-discussed experimenta radium and bouillon :--

what is called a man of science, I have endeavoured to keep an open. mind for all the discoveries of mådern'

We can, I’hope, gladly await the reaults of inquiry and cheer on those who are engaged in it.

"Whon Professor Huxley gave his presidential address to the British Associa tion on the home, Omne vivum ex viro," ho leo, if I remember right, declared, in what he termed an act of scientific faith.'

his⠀⠀ expectation that the origla of life on the globe would one dayTM bio mude scientifically clear. It is not cortsin, indeed, that the experim onts of Mc Burke, even if they stand all the tests which must be applied to them, oan satisfy this expectation. When they would seems to

life oxist in show is that the germs-of

where they were not ex- pected; that they are not destroyed by instenso heat. and that they are called into activity by radium.

'I do not know what preciso importance would be attributed to this by men of science. In the theologian it certainly would excite no alarm, but, on the con

AVENUE,

I had the advantage of hearing the great debito at the British Association at Oxford in 1880 on the theory of the brigin of species as expounded by Darwin in hie famous work a few months before. My account of this discussion was incorporated by Mr. Frau- cis Darwin in his later Life of his father. Bishop Wilberforc and others, especially Darwin's old friend Admiral Fitzroy, con- demiled the theory of development se denying the power of the Creator. But & friend of mine, one of our greatest men of

Acionce pointed out to me that to speak of a thing being created told us nothing at all-the question was, How, by what pro cess, was it created Everyone must admit a creative force, an Eternal Energy of which Horbert Spencer maid that it was the most certain of all certainties..

But the manner in which this croatire.. power acts is only partially disclosed to us,

and our minds prosa on eagerly to know more. There, can hardly be any serious persons who temsin in the state of Living- stone's carly friend, who cut short his in- quiries into goology by saying, "When God made the rocks He made the shells in the rocks.' But, if we begin to inquire, wo must let science hayo her full swing, and put no check upon inquiry.

If it should be proved that the origins of life lie in what wo have before thought of as dead matter, it would poly mean that. we must give what we have called mattor a substantial place in the vast organic whole which comprehends both the material and the spiritual, and that there is no break bev

Lord Curzon Explains the Modified Plans.

SIMLA, July 18. Presiding at the Leglelative Council-to- day, Lord Curzon made a statement in regard to the modifications sanctioned by the Secretary of State in respect of the proposed reform in the administration of Indian Army.

The main principles of the schemo reinain unaltered, but changes have been made in ita details.

It has been decided that the office of Military Supply Member should go to a Military officer, not to a Civillan.

The Viceroy will have the right to consult, that officer upon all military questions irrespective of their places of origin.

All military questions, whether originat ing from the Military Supply Department or the Army Departinent, should be passed

by the Mobilisation Committee..

The Secretary of the Army Department should be a Major General, or Colonel with the local rank of Major General.

Finally a schedule of cases has been drawn up which should go up to the Viceroy before orders could be passed.”

Lord Curzon, in concluding his speech, said that the new syetem, like the old, will depend in the main upon the 'personal equation' for its success or failure.

General Elica, the present military mem- ber of Council, resigns in October.-Straits Times.

SIMLA, July 19.

The differences between Lord. Curzon and Lord Kitchener have now been bridged

.over.

Lord Curzon, however, vacates the Vice- roy hip in March next at the conclusion of the Indian tour of the Prince and Princess of Walos.

Louikov, and its advance guard, with cavalry, after attacking the enemy on the north side of Louikov, entered the town. Street fighting ensued and at 8.30 am. Louikov was completely cap- tured. Our army's right column, after defeating the enemy at Wedernikovski, pressed hard upon them. The enemy's main forco fled in a disorderly condition southward on the night of the 27th instant.

A detachment sent in pursuit met the enemy's infantry, about 800 strong, on the 28th instant, at a point eight

- Dear Sir:-I don't know how to express my gratitude for the relief Doan's Backache Kidney Pills have given me.. For sixteen No. 37, D'AQUILAR STREET, months I was tormented with sciatica; I could scarcely move, but since taking H. B. M. GOVERNMENT, &o, &0.3 PER CENT. per annum Depositors

amination this way,' he said. And the Customs officer asked me if I had anything to declare-in English I took, in very quietly. After all, one must adapt oneself to the customs of foreign countries without demur. It was disappointing when I, with groat presence of mind, had addressed Beer, Spirits and Tea, as this medicine -hack-driver as "Flacre, which word I learned in my third lesson, that he should tako no notice whatever, and reply: Cab, sir? But I let him drive me to my

hotel. Of course they all spoke English there. The guests were all English, so were th waiters as I happen to know, for I spoke to several of them in French, and not one of them appeared to understand, and they all replied in English. I believe the chambor-maid was French, or had at any rate lived for some time in Paris, for when I mentioned to her that I should like some

The pains were chiefly in my back and hot-water-speaking in French and pre-lege, and sometimes they were so sovero nouncing the word with the proper accent that I nearly fell to the ground when out as 'oh shoshe certainly did reply: "ot walking. At nights I was so bad that often wartor,' but she added 'm'aicu* and *oui;' both of which are unmistakably French.-

With the exception of those two easy worde I did not find one person in Paris who was capable of addressing me in com prehensible French. I doubt if I stw more than five French words written over shop fronts or on the advertisement kiosks. You will find more in Regent strect any day of the week. I am ready to forfeit any reasonable sum to any person who can show me such a simple phrase as ‘Ici'on parlo Francais written over any shop throughout Faris, while all the world knows that it is one of the commonest sights of the streets of London.

I have had to got out of bed; I could not lie there and endure the agony.

Your Doan's Backacho Kidooy Pills have effected a perfect cure, and I have never folt anything of the pain since. Please make what use you like of this testimony, and bollevo me to be,

Yours gratefully,
