THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL-

14:

IN RUSSIA.

Talking of the Russian Court ́(says. M.A.P.), the most beautiful girl in St Petersburg society is the only daughter of the late Vice-Adniiral Makaroff, who per. ished on board the Petropavlovsk. Miss Makaroff, who is only 20 years of age, ia tall and alight, with a wealth of soft, brown hair, dark eyes, and a rich complexion. She is an admirable English scholar, and has a preference for everything English.

The erroneous report that crept into circulation that her loyer as well as her father had perished on the Petropavlovsk rosulted in Misa Makaroff receiving innumerable proposals of marriage from all over the word, one being from a young American millionaire, who, in the exuberance of his compassion, laid both his heart and his fortune at the foot of the beautiful young Russian.

Miss Makaroff's fiance, Lieutenant Kødr- ofi, is still in Chins. He left for the Eas at the very ourbreak of hostilities as aide- de-camp to Admiral Makaroff, and was the only member of his staff who escaped being drowned on board the Petropavlovak.

It appears that a few minutes before the Russian fleet set out in pursuit of the Japanese on that memorable morning, just 12 months ago, the Commander-in-Chief Bant the young lieutenant ashore to tologaph a message to Mme. Makaroff at Petorhoff. Whon Lieutenant Kodroff ROAD. Nand 29, WONG NEI OHONG

Remarkable Results in Cancer Cases.

Remarkable reports are published in Now York of the continued success of Lieber's radium treatment in cases of can- cor and similar diseases at the Flower Hospital.

In the cases of the convalescent patients, whose improvement has already been made known, pencils painted with Lieber's radium solution are being inserted in deep incisions, where they will be left for 48 hours.

over the lifebuoy, which was done. Strug gling amid the churned-up water in, the wake of the propeller, Pearce succeeded

in securing the woman in the buoy. But 1ST before the vessel could be turned round the steward and his charge were left far behind, and, in fact, out of sight amid water known to be infested by sharks.

As quickly as possible the "Rimutaka's" engines were reversed and hosts wore lowered, but for some time nothing could "be seen of the two persons in the water. At last some one shouted from the rigging: On the port side; there they are,' and a few minutes later both were picked up.

Penics had swum for half an hour, direct- ing the lifebuoy with one hand and swim. ming with the other. On being hauled on board, amid the cheers of the passengors, "be lost consciousness, and did not recover

for an nour.

The brave steward said that while in the rea his heart wank as the steamer gradually increased its distance from him, until at times he could only see the funnel. The fear of sharks also proyed or his mind. Later, Pearce, who is an Irishman of 25, was presented by Captain Greenstreet with

CONSTIPATION'S RAVAGES.

BILE BEANS A GERTAIN REMEDY.

THE OPINION OF A GREAT PHYSICIAN.

THAT celebrated physician, the lato Sir

Andrew Clark, expressed the firm opinion that constipation was the cause of one half of the ailments from which women and girls suffer. It fills the blood with impurities, robs the system of energy, causes piles, headache, biliousness, skin eruptions, and a host of other disorders.. For these disorders, and for their root "cause (constipation), Bile Beans are un-

equalled.

Mra 8. Williams, of Longhope, Glouce- ster, England, has proved this.

to constipation. It brought on piles and biliousness, robbed me of appetite and energy, and made my life a burden to me, Many a weary day have I spent weighed down with a feeling of utter wretchedness, and not caring whether I lived or died. Doctors? Yes I tried sovoral, but no amount of doctoring seemed capable of affording mo the slightest relief and by dogress I grow weaker and weaker.

A few months ago I saw some striking "testimony in a newspaper to the success of ↑ Bile Beana in cases of constipation: So I determined to give them a fair trial, Soon after toginning the course I felt a change. I became brighter and as I porsevered with the Beans the distressing symptoms from which I had suffered so long began to leave me. My appetite improved, and my bowels were corrected and strengthened. I ceased to be troubled with Constipation, and what I ate no longer mado me bilious. Now, After a thorough course of the Beans I feel stronger, more vigorous, and in better Boalth generally than I have felt for many years. Thanks alone to Bile Beans, life for me has been made once more worth living

As quickly as possible the "Rimutaka's" engines were reversed and hosts were lowered, but for some time nothing could bo neon of the two_parsons in the water. For these disorders, and for their root cause (constipation), Bile Boans are un- .oqualled.

Some Press Comments.

The news of the occupation of a por tion of Saghalien is received by the vernacular Press with the utmost salis faction for the reason that the Japanese army has for the first time put foot on Bussian soil, whereas the battles during the past eighteen months have been fought outside Russian territory. Pure sentiment is another reason for the Japin- ese jubilation, says the Jajan Chronicle. Saghalien, over which Japan had cortain rights, of which she was deprived by Russia in what is considered to have boun ah unfair way, has now been re-ecoupied, and it will henceforth be a part of Japan.

thing will more clearly explain these re- lations than the discovery, in 1809, by Mamiya Rinshu, who was sent by the. Japaneso Gororament on a geographical survey, of the straits between the island and the mainland, known to the world by the name of the Mamiya Straits. The Jiji concludes its article by dwelling at some longth on the history of Saghalien,

However people may sentimentally re- juice over the occupation of Soghalion, writes the Nippon, it is only a small job from a military point of view. With the command of the sea in the hands of Japan, the fate of the island became a foregone conclusion. Indeed, the annexation of Saghalien by Russia must be considered as one of her blunders. By the acquisition

.

of an island by which she could never have expected to specially profit, Russia incurred the implacable enmity of the Japanese. However, she can hardly be blamed for her want of foresight in this respect, for thirty years ago nobody would havo suppos- ed that Japan would develop into such a Power and be enabled to exert the influence which she now wields., The Nippon goes on to say: "For future military activities on a gigantic scale wo unust look in the

direction of Manchuria and North Korea. When the curtain rises on the now dramo -it-will-have-an'effec; analogous to that of the destruction of the Russian armada in the Japan Sea. We hope that this will soon come to pass, for the sake of the reputation of the Japanese Army,”.
