Mia Hessey continues in The Monthly Review her gossipijpy reminiscences entitled- Quaint Memories." I remember my, father telling me (she says),of a noted Non- conformist preacher of that day in London who, in his anxiety to arouse his congregs, tion from their inertness, and to move their to personal activity, trenchantly expressed himself tha: You won't take any trouble for yourselves, you won't move a finger. In fact, you all think you'll get to heaven by hanging on to my gost-tails. But T take care you don't, I'll cheat you, for Tu go in a short jacket. This kind of thing would somewhat astonish London con, gregation at the present day.

Dr. Mansel, the lato Dean of St. Paul's,.. told me a story of a meeting he once a tended, where a local dissenting preacher got up and addressed the meeting with, "My friends, you've got these learned English clergy here, and I should just like to ask them a few plain questions. Foa 100, my friends, they make a lot of being:" able to read different languages, but I am thankful to say I have got my own English Bible, and that's enough for me. What, my friends, do you mean to tell me that you suppose St. Paul road all that gibber. ish? No, no. my friends, you may depend

English as you and I-do." Now I just want to ask them a question out of my Eng. lish Bible, which I'll trouble them to answer. Now, they are always wanting to bapting the babies. Now, where do they find that in the English Bible? I read, Except a man be born again," Now, my friends, it don't say a boy, not, a gal, nor even a coman, much less a babby, but i man must be born again. Now answer me that?' Dr Mansel got up and said he could not congratulate himself upon know. ing only the English language. On the contrary, ho was deeply thankful to foul that he could read the Bible in the langu age in which it was originally written, But that was neither here nor there. Now, to answor his friend out of his owr English Bible, it is written that a woman rememberath no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world;" Now, my friends, it does not say a boy, it does not say a girl, and it certainly does not say a baby, but a man that is born into the world.'

A cousin of mine wont to take duty in a remote hamlet in Lncolnshiro.

He was- astonished to find a great part of the west end of the church, under the tower, stacked almost to the roof with faggots. He told the clerk, after the service, that he hoped- they would be taken away, anything so ansoemly could not be allowed in a church. Lor', sir! Muster A-' (mentioning a farmer's name) would never hear of they faggots being moved. Why, they do mako capital forroting. · Lady's First Impressions.

First impressions are proverbially subject

to revision, and the lady who is writing for the Empire Revieg an account of her ex- perience, on a Rhodesian farm may modify her views later on. But her story is interest. ing. We quote from her diary:-

Tuesday, May 11th. Was awakened very early by the cook-boy with tea. I don't like the look of him at all. He wears. a murderous-looking knife in his bolt, a flower in one ear, and has a most ferocious expression. His garments also are con- spicuous for the rents in them, so possibly the niggers in clothes have some patent ideas about ventilation. Breakfast very "tinney." Tinned milk, tinned butter, fin- ned jam, tinned fish, tin cups and sauceru, and tin plates, Beginning to feel a bit of a tinney martyr myself, After breakfast studied my surroundings from the verandah, Kopjes everywhere, in assorted sizes, Kopjes to the fight, kopjes to the left, kopjes in the front, and kopjes at the back. Wonder if I shall ever got to like them? Seo only, deadly sameness
